Coach P's Documentary Binge...

So as you might have heard, I am not so down with the exercise things right now...so outside of working so much I am driving Rich and company crazy, I am checking out some documentaries. Currently bouncing through Martin Spurlock's 30 Days (yes he of super size me fame) and curious to hear your recommendations...

Thanks!!!

~ Coach P

Anyone know where I can watch slaying the Badger online? I am overseas and my netflix content is not the same as stateside. I do have a VPN but Netflix is constantly battling VPN users.

Hi Coach, have you seen the Richard Parks documentaries? I saw them on a plane recently and quite good. There is one set where he does seven continents highest peaks in a year and second when he does a monster Nepal MTN bike race, an ultra in Peru and The Brutal double ironman before a race to the pole record attempt.

I watched Meru for free "on demand" from DTV and liked it (about big Wall climbing of Mt. Meru in the Himalayas). Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvS6O9lVkkg

Running on the Sun (about the Badwater race). Here's the whole movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl3laLhbCsw

Bicycle Dreams (About Race Across America - RAAM). Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1ZWZrKSxxs

Everyone in America should watch "Fed Up" (about "Sugar" addiction and how it has taken over the US food industry in the last 40+ yrs causing our obesity epidemic). It's available on Netflix or Amazon or YouTube. Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCUbvOwwfWM

+1 on JW's recommendation on Bicycle Dreams....I have the DVD and a ripped copy on MP4 if you want...don't think it's on any streaming service. I've gotten to know Dave Haase here in Wisconsin (2nd overall last year...1st American). That race is beyond imagination. He has a cool partnership with IBM and they run telemetry on his biometrics and have an algorithm that links to current/planned weather to determine when he should stop and rest, when he should push, etc. Last year he averaged 90 minutes of sleep per day over 8+ days, with the balance of time in the saddle.

Race Across the Sky is pretty good...about the Leadville Trail 100. That's available on YouTube.

Also really liked "Stop at Nothing" on netflix. If you don't hate Lance now you definitely will after watching.

This is a great topic BTW...can we capture the findings in the Wiki somewhere for reference? Maybe group into cycling, running, and general interest? Would be great to have this entering into the OS with all the trainer time.

And one more thing to pile on...why not add non-documentary or documentary-ish movies to this list that are in the Tri/Endurance space?

My votes - American Flyers, Breaking Away, Prefontaine, The Jericho Mile, Chasing Legends

One more "General Interest" one... I (and most people I know who watched it) was fascinated by the "Making a Murderer" mini-series/documentary on Netflix.

The Crash Real. I found this one inspirational because of the real work it took to return to "normal." This one is about Olympic snow skier and traumatic brain injuries.

Al, Looks like an amazing trip. Have a wonderful time. Two years ago I went to India with my daughter and 23 students from the University of Houston. Was an amazing trip. We were able to visit a lot of major businesses. In addition,we toured the Presidents house and had high tea with the Vice president in his home. Very interesting man. We also had an opportunity to visit local villages and meet women who were learning how to start up a small business to support their families. Would love to do more traveling during retirement. Enjoy!!!
