Advice for step-son with ankle injury in China
Nick is a mechanical engineer living in China. He's not an athlete but stays active, basketball is his favorite pastime.
Last fall he fractured his ankle (X-rays available) but did not get much western medical assistance beyond that. Last week he sent this seeking advice:
Hey mom, I was wondering if you could ask someone at the hospital about my ankle. I can walk with zero pain, and I have been self rehabbing it a lot lately so that I can get the full range of motion back. I did aome research and the fracture I had was to the lateral malleolus (type A fracture), and there isnt a lot of information online about rehabbing that kind of break specifically.
When i fully extend (toes point away and in the opposite direction toes pointed toward me, as well as rotating ankle away from body) I feel the most pain. Im guessing the pain is from weak ligaments, but I really have no experience with it. I feel it most in the sinus tarsi area, and if I apply some pressure to the fibula posteriorly the pain is lessened in the same range of motion. Also the sinus tarsi area is always a little puffy
Im interested to know what kind of rehabilitation is recommended and anything else I can do to get back to 100%
Any thoughts or suggestions to help him out?
Thanks,
Steven
