Helmet for use in the US

Team - I need some help/advice.

I have a Giro Atmos helmet and a Lazer Tardiz helmet and both have the CE (European standard certification) sticker on them.  As I am doing Placid later this summer I "technically" need to use a helmet that complies with the CPSC standard.

Giro have told me that if my Giro helmet does to have a CPSC sticker on it then it doesn't comply.  Is the Giro Atmos as sold in the US different to the one sold in Europe?

Lazer state that their helmets are CE-CPSC-Au certified but the helmet I have only has a CE sticker on it.  I am assuming that this helmet is approved for use in the US but will I need a CPSC sticker to confirm this? Is the Lazer Tardiz as sold in Europe the same as the Lazer Tardiz as sold in the US?  I have contacted Lazer but have not had a response yet

Any info?

  • I cannot speak with certainty about whether the helmets are exactly the same but will say I used my Lazer Sunday at Florida 70.3 and not a single soul questioned or even looked for a sticker. Do they usually look for one? I think you should be fine.
  • Thanks Tucker - that was my original thought.  I have raced in the US before and never had my helmet checked.

I noted that the race rules state;"CPSC-approved helmet is required during the entire bike portion including in and out of

transition area. Any athlete riding without an approved helmet or chinstrap not fastened may

be disqualified. Alterations to hard-shell helmet, which affect its integrity, are not allowed."

    Hence my slight concern.

  • I think it is more legalese covering their asses. I wouldn't worry. Buckle your strap and ride smart and you should be fine.
  • I would suggest not "advertising" your open helmet in the transition zone though.  I have been to many races where officials start their day walking through the bike racks, typically looking for bikes without handle bar plugs.  I could imagine that if your helmet were upsidedown on top of your bars, that they might take a quick sticker glance.

This is such a pain - I wish the helmet companies would sit down with the rules organization(s) and work out an agreement.

  • I've heard stories about people not being able to ride due to a missing sticker. Check slowtwitch.
