Consequence of running w/o hydration
Here's something to think about. Got a call from a friend today. Her brother is in a hypothermic coma in Eugene. He was running Saturday without hydration. Temp was in the low 80's. He's in his mid 40's. He had run about 10 miles. Luckily his wife was home. She watched him drop on the front porch in a full code arrest. Turned out he had dehydrated the fluid in the sack around his heart. His doctors have tried to re warm him twice. For some reason his body is not replacing the fluid as quickly as expected.
I see more people running without fluid than with fluid. Reguardless of temperature. My friends brother had been warned several times by his doctor to run with hydration. I talked to a friend, who is a cardiologist, he said it happens when the temperature rises and they see it in endurance athletes. He said that the body will go after fluid where ever it is hiding to keep flow to the kidneys.
I think I will continue to run with my camel bak, looking like a newbe dork.
Stay thirsty my friends!
