PowerTap P1 Pedals Accuracy Concerns?

Has anyone experienced accuracy concerns with the new P1 pedals? I've had a powertap Hun for years with great results. This year I would like to switch to something which solves my issues (transfer ability and portability (can't leave my powertap in the car in the Middle East in the summer or it cooks the electronics)).

I've read DC Rainmaker and several other reviews. All are positive.

But bike radar came out with a damning review of the P1s. They slammed them for their lack of accuracy in a simultaneous testing environment. Not sure if it was a firmware issue or a larger issue.

Would appreciate any input from the haus.

Here is the review. It seems like an in depth review.
  • Nope....I tested mine for many rides with my Quarq Elsa and every single ride was within 1 watt, or less than 0.5% delta. In my experience the results were incredibly accurate. They have also aligned with my KICKR and other PMs tested in parallel.

My guess is that either Bikeradar got a lemon pair of P1s or someone has an axe to grind.
  • Mine seem to be right on the money as well.  Spoke to some KONA vets and they all give these pedals a thumbs up for accuracy, durability and quality in general.

  • Thanks Jeremy & SS.

I've heard 99% great things in terms of accuracy. Was just a bit concerned with bike radars review. It shook my confidence in the product a bit. Agree with @ Jeremy's assessment; maybe it was a lemon or there is some unpleasant history with PowerTap.
  • I run my pedals against the computrainer once in a while and they are close enough. I'm happy with the pedals.
  • I've not run them side-by-side with my quarq, but I just rode 500 miles with them in Mallorca Spain, and while they seemed just a little bit higher than my quarq, I believe them to be pretty reliable. Again, not too scientific obviously, but they work great for me!

Biggest catch for me, I'm still getting used to using the keo pedal system, coming from the last 12+ years of being 100% speedplay.
  • Bike Radar's review of aero helmets last year was slammed (by many highly competent people including ERO sports) as inept and incompetent. I don't know if their lack of engineering smarts on helmets extends to testing of other bike products but they were so utterly bruised from that ST beating that I'm not sure I would give any of their reviews credibility.

Here is one post by an expert:

Complete waste of time when using a mannequin without a torso/shoulders. Way to much interaction in that area to get any kind of definitive results. Then you have all the different positioning of the tape around the straps, some of which were placed better than others; that's very poor attention to a very important detail, and likely had as much impact on the results as anything else. It's also important to test helmets at different angles, which it looks like they failed to do. I've sort of given up on Bikeradar and aero testing. We need to get media out of aero testing altogether.

  • Additional question on the p1s. They come with Lithium ion batteries, which I presume are rechargeable, yes?
I just ordered a recharger via amazon.

Hope I can use regular ol AAA duracells in the meantime!
