cleat wedges - anyone use them?

My right foot is rotating to the outside on my pedal stroke. It seems that a wedge to the outside could cant my foot inward and alleviate the problem. Anyone have experience with wedges? In-shoe or cleat wedges?

Thanks

  • I use LeMond LeWedges ( http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Wedge+Shims&vendorCode=BIKEFIT&major=5&minor=6 ) for my right foot because of a slight length discrepancy between legs. They, along with Specialized shoe inserts, also helped me completely resolve a hot foot issue.

I would advise that like virtually all bike related adjustments, a little goes a long ways.
  • I am a pronator on the run and so I use a single wedge on each foot. They are the yellow wedges you can buy (don't remember the model). Can't say anything good or bad about them cause they seem to work pretty well, no complaints.

  • @John - mebbe place a thread in the Medical Forum and see what Leigh thinks? I have a functional LLD and now wedge 1 cleat by 3mm - seems to be doing OK, however, I did read a piece by Rasmus Henning the danish Pro - he's has an actual LLD caused by one of his femurs being longer, he had good results by just moving the cleats back on the shoes - might be worth moving the cleats back some first and see what happens - wedges are kinda pricey for what they are.
  • John... another idea, too, is to check in with a local bike shop that does fitting. They can check your alignment (of knees and ankles and things) while you pedal to really let you know what's going on and let you know what kind of wedge you'd need (or if it's something simple like Dave said...you may just need to move a cleat?) I had this done and the bike fit guy (ok, my husband!) set me up with the appropriate wedges. (I want to keep calling them "wedgies"!) we also adjusted my cleats some. Hope that helps!
  • Can someone clarify what a wedge actually is and what it does. I have speedplay pedals and my right leg is stronger than my left so with each pedal rotation my right foot rotates too. And to top it off I also pronate (right foot only). When I purchased my TT bike this past winter I had the retul fit and the guy pointed this out. He said I would be better off with look pedals because there's no float. I stuck with speedplay for a while longer, b/c that's what on my road bike. With a reocurring IT band issue, I think it's starting from the bike. Any ideas? Maybe I should start a new thread, I dunno.

  •  Jessica- Not a bike guru but I do ride Look pedals and there is plenty of float if you want it (they are adjustable). I can't imagine what differnce the pedals make. The wedge is just a shim that cants your foot either in or out depending upon your needs. I use them to cant my foot inward to keep my knee from tracking outward. I have just experimented and they seem to work for me.
