Red Bull at Aid Stations

Just looked at the newly-posted Muncie 70.3 Athlete Guide.  Two notable differences at the aid stations:

1) Clif Shot and Clif Bloks replace GU and Roctane gels

2) Red Bull has been added to the bike and run aid stations

Red Bull???  Has anyone trained or raced with that stuff?

  • No. Afraid to try. Maybe i should. Might help for emergency repair when coke is not enough ? Though potentially dangerous.
  • I've definitely seen RB on run courses but havent noticed it on a bike course. Guess some people need an extra jolt!
  • They had Red Bull on the run course at Steelhead 70.3 last year. I drank it at every aid station and never had any problems - first time i every drank it too. I know I broke one of the sacred rules.... I did feel pretty awesome during the run though. All related to red bull, doubt it, but.... I'll be drinking it on the run course again, thats for sure
  • @Chris - did they serve it a paper cup? I wonder how'd they even serve it on the bike -- the cans are too small -- you'd have to chug it and toss before leaving the aid station.
  • Very smart to look ahead and note what nutrition options will be available on your race course.

Definitely don't make the race course your first time to try something new.  Give yourself 2 or 3 training runs using race course nutrition to help you decide how your gut is going to react and if you need to employ an alternative nutrition strategy of your own.

  • I drink RB on the run just to wash my mouth and have a different taste during the run and I love bubbles.. (I wish they could serve champagne!!)
  • Red Bull has such a strong taste ... may need to add Jagermeister to make it palatable
  • They served Red Bull on the run at 70.3 Oceanside, and 70.3 St George this year. It was served in cups. I did not see it on the bike, but I wasn't looking because I have never used it in practice, so I won't use it on a race.
  • Pickle Juice tastes better than Red Bull. That stuff is just gross.
  • I drink Red Bull regularly (just 1/2 can before training sessions) so was thrilled when it appeared at IMChoo! But agree w/ Shaughn "Definitely don't make the race course your first time to try something new."
  • The problem comes in when WTC feels that RB is a sponsor so they are more concerned about pushing the RB and not about stocking coke. Was an issue for me at run aid at IMMT 2014 when they had many stations which ran out of coke. (finish time 12 hours)
