Quassy Oly Execution

This will be my 6th time doing the Quassy Oly. (Holy crap!)  Every year has been a PR, mostly cuz I started from painfully slow and have moved my way up to just "kinda slow".  image  This season has been a very non-traditional tri training season.  As I prep for the Patriot Half in June, I have been doing a lot of bike focus including CX in the fall/winter and some road races this spring.  My FTP is near my all-time high from last July and I've put in roughly double the bike mileage that I had at this time last year.  Then there's the run... (Hey, somethings gotta give!)

I've kept up with the long runs fairly well and did a half mary in April, about 7' slower than I had the prior year.  Swimming is what it is, maybe a smidge slower.

All of that being said, I'm thinking about how I pace the bike at Quassy.  Last year, I rode at about 88% with a good (for me) run. With significantly more riding under my belt, is riding a little harder OK (without killing the run) or is my decreased run training more of a consideration?  I should also note I haven't done a lot of brick runs lately so that might be another strike against me.  In that case, do I ride <88%?<br>
I'd love another overall PR, so I don't necessarily want to KILL the bike.....  I still can't climb for $hit.  image

  • Kim you know that course better than anybody here... Go get that PR .... Whats the worst that can happen? Blow up and have a great training day.... You have been killing yourself on that bike and learning new ways to push yourself...I'd say push a little higher on the bike than you usually do , yes maybe a higher IF but you'll get off the bike sooner = lower TSS... I'd dont think your run will suffer as much as you think it will ...With your knowledge of that course I'm gonna put my money on you for another PR.... When you get done playing around with Quassy , if at all possible , do as much Patriot HIM race specificity as you can... What is that??? FLAT BIKE AND FLAT RUN ! Yes its different , all AERO and faster :-)
  • I'm with Tim's strategy.  For an OLY (and I have raced more than 50 of those in my younger days) I would hammer the heck out of that bike and rely on experience and going dark to get that run done.

Look forward to reading about your upcoming PR soon!
