Calling Dan Socie and any other camera people

My Daughter is taking a Digital Photography class next year and she needs a good camera. We are looking to spend between 500-600 for it. I was wondering what people recommend for brands and what is a good lense to start off with.

Thanks

  • Canon Digital Rebel is a great camera to start out with it and it comes with a 18-55mm lens with it. It's a fine lens to start out with.

  • Thanks Dan,

If you were to get one more lens for that camera what would you recommend. I see best buy has 2 package offers on this page.

You are helping to make my daughters birthday a very happy one.

  • I prefer a wide angle lens as it makes you physically get closer to your subject and forces you to interact with the subject. So if you get the 18-55 then and 2nd long lens like a 55-250 then you'll have all ranges covered.
  • I second the Digital Rebel! I've been photographing with the Canon Rebels forever, and I find them to be incredibly tough and long lasting cameras. In fact, my sister just borrowed my original film Rebel that's over 10 years old for her high school photography class with absolutely no problems. I take my digital almost everywhere and haven't had any problems in 3 years. I'd recommend the 55-250 too, as it will give her plenty of flexibility for the various projects in her class.
  • I use Nikon---have a D90--because I used Nikon film cameras and was used to the set-up. I second what Dan says about the wide angle lens. You might want to consider a single focal length lens (you can get them cheap on E-bay) as it will teach her to move around to get her shot instead of relying on the zoom. Very old school, I know, but a great photog exercise.
  • 1 Canon Rebel XS bought and 1 canon 55-250 mm bought, someone is going to have a happy bday.

My next project for her is to try to make a cake that looks like a camera.

    Thanks everyone.
