Bike Rack

Hi Folks,

I usually put my bike in the trunk when traveling, but will be moving to Calgary in September with the "only bringing everything that fits in my car" approach, so no room for my bikes.  Looking to buy a rack to carry my road bike and tri bike since that seems cheaper than shipping two bikes and need suggestions.  I have a Subaru Forester.  I obviously want my bikes to ride safely, but also don't see myself using this rack that much beyond this move, so don't want to spend a fortune.  Also, how good are the locks on bike racks?  I will be doing the drive over several days and ideally would love to not unload and reload the bikes every day, but I'm thinking I might have to?

Anyone have a good one to recommend?

  • I've had no complaints with this one. Amazingly (to me at least) it fits on my wife's Infinity SUV and my BMW Sedan with some easy opening or closing. Strong wires latch on to the top and bottom of trunk. I think it only has one lock, though you might be able to extend it out to wrap around both top tubes. As far as the wire of the locking mechanism, nothing a big pair of wire cutters could not handle (so I would not leave it on overnight). Regardless, you have to remove to get into trunk. Taken multiple 4+ hour trips with it and no movement problems.

  • Thule is a good, reputable option.....I had one for several years.

Additionally you might want to compare with Saris racks as well before making your final decision.

  • Rachel,

If I recall you are in the chicagoland area. I have a strap on bike rack you can have. A buddy give it to me, I decided to put a hitch on my car, so I have never used it. It is a Yakima 3 bike model, I don't know what they call it - but if you want it PM me and let's arrange to exchange it.
