Coach Rich will be in Denver this Weekend

Hey,

I fly out on Wednesday to attend a wedding on Saturday. I'm staying with my sister and her family, will be great to see them again....but pretty sure I could use some time away as well . Does anyone want to loan me a bike and show me around? Or tell me where to rent a bike? I think Thurs, Fri, Sun, Monday mornings are posibilities. I ride a 54.

I did some good work last week and want to keep it rolling. Thanks!

  • I would also be up for a social gathering this weekend, if anyone wants to hook that up. With the exception of the rehearsal dinner on Friday and pretty much all day Saturday, any other time is good for me.

Now to find the suit I haven't worn in about 8yrs...

  • Rich:

Where are you staying? The Rocky Mountain Cycling Club does rides Saturday and Sunday mornings (starting at 7:45 am). I'm planning to do the Sunday morning ride, which leaves this week from a location in northeastern Aurora (right at I70 and Tower Rd) and heads onto the eastern plains for some very flat riding. There are 2 options, a Recreational/Performance ride, which is 54 miles and an endurance ride (90 miles). I'm planning to do the R/P ride, because it fits in pretty well with the scheduled 3 hour sunday ride for this week.

The Saturday ride is in Boulder and will have significantly more climbing. The R/P ride is 62 miles and the Endurance ride is 111. Check out www.rmccrides.com for maps to the starting location. Or, if you're interested in the Sunday ride, you can come over to my house and we'll ride (about 10 miles) over to the start.

I can't help with the bicycle. I ride a 60. Although, my wife has a Specialized Allez Sport that might be about a 54. I could tune it up for you. Let me check the size tonight and I'll let you know.
  • Hey Steve,

No idea where I'm staying. Sunday's event is a brunch so I'm assuming I'm expected to be clean, sociable, and in civilian attire by about 11a-12p? Please find out the size of that bike though, thanks!

  • Will do. If you can tell me what area of town you'll be staying, I can give you an idea of whther you'd make that 11 am brunch. I'm thinking that a 8:00 am start to a 52 mile ride will make it difficult to be cleaned up and at the brunch by 11 am. But, hell... I'm a morning person. If you just want to ride from my house, we can do most of that ride (or a modified version) even earlier. It's pretty much light by 5:15 am at this time of year.
  • Rich, if you are wanting to rent a bike, here are some decent shops around town:

Denver Spoke - kind of central

BikeSource Multisport - Southwest side of town (Highlands Ranch) - (303) 221-4840

Wheat Ridge Cyclery - North end of town

Big Ring Cycles - Golden, west of town

  • Hey Steve,

Just called sis. I'll be in the Centenial/Littleton area and actually Saturday looks like it would be a better day for me to ride vs Sunday. So...planning on 7:45 in Boulder.

Now to hook up a bike.

  • We have a size 53 ti/carbon road bike that you might be able to ride with a few minor adjustments and a saddle swap. Brian also has a 54 cross bike that can take road wheels, but it's heavier and probably not what you'd want to ride. His 15 lb 54 will be in use up in the high country this weekend.

Yes, ride in Boulder. Me thinks you will want to do some climbing. Hopefully the route will include Lee Hill etc. Have fun out here, hopefully this $hite-like wind we're having will chill out by the time you get here. Temps should be great though!
  • @Rich, If you are in Littleton, you can easily do a 100+ mile ride along the Platte river trail and out to Chatfield and beyond. It's mostly flat and fast, not much climing at all. As for riding in The Peoples Republic of Boulder, make sure you climb Old Stage Coach and go throught Left Hand Canyon. Its a really fun climb, not too bad and a REALLY fun and fast decent. Bike shops in Boulder, if you need a rental, there are two, Excel Sports Boulder (303-444-6737) and Boulder Cycle Sport (303-444-2453). Both shops you can ride right from the shops. Enjoy, I wish I could join you.
  • Rich:

I checked the bike, and it's a 52. Sorry about that. If you want to try, we may be able to make it fit well enough. Let me know. If I can swing it, maybe I'll come out and ride with you on Saturday.
  • Rich if you are planning on riding Monday I would love to start with you, I already know that after warm up I will only see you wherever you stop to wait up. All kinds of good rides around Denver. The trails mentioned by Chuck go forever but there is likely to be heavy traffic on a holiday weekend and not going to be appreciated if you try and hammer on them. I am good anytime on Monday as I can switch anything alse around that day. Saturday is out for me as they will have me chained to a desk at work all day.
  • I just boxed up my bike and will ship it 2nd day today, to arrive on Thursday. I should be able to ride every day except Sunday.

Does anyone know if Mt Evans is open yet?

  • Mt. Evans is scheduled to open on Friday.

Let me know if you're planning to do the RMCC Boulder ride on Saturday, Rich. I've got a hall pass from the spousal unit to come do it. However, if you're not going to be there, I may just stick with the original plan to do 4 hours on my own on Sat. morning and then ride with the RMCC on Sunday.
  • Steve, I'm IN for Saturday. Any chance I can get a ride with you so I don't tie up the rented minivan and my sister can use it? I'm staying in Centenial. Lemme know.

  • Not really on my way, but I don't mind picking you up. Just means I need to leave earlier. image Make sure I have the address of where to pick you up, and I'll let you know what time I'll be there so we can make a 7:45 bike departure.
  • Let me get on the ground and see what vehicle options I have for my own transpo

  • It's not that far out of the way. I live in Stapleton, which is a little northwest of Centennial (i.e., closer to Boulder). So, I'd have to come south and then head north again, but fortunately, Both Centennial and Stapleton are east of I25, so I could do pretty much a straight shot south, pick you up, and then take 25 north to 36 west and we're there. I really don't mind. As I said before, I'm a morning person, and I'll be up well before 6 anyway.

If it works out easier for YOU to drive yourself, that's cool, but don't bust your ass trying to wrangle transportation for Sat. when I can pick you up.
  • Steve, I'm in town and sorting out Saturday. For tomorrow I'd like to do 3-4hrs door to door including any drive time. Any recommendations for me? Seems that anything around me (Centenial) would involve riding thru traffic before I got to anything? Worth it to drive west somewhere about 30' and climb for 2-3hrs?
  • Looking at bear creek road/hwy 74 to evergreen?
  • If you want some climbing, drive to C470 and 121 (just west of Chatfield Reservoir) and park right off 121 on Deer Creek Canyon Rd. (County Rd. 124) and head west. You can go for as long as you want. Then just turn around and come back. There's I've got a MapMyRide map... let me find it and I'll post a link.
  • This is almost 48 miles, with a LOT of climbing and great descents (since you'll be descending some of what you climbed).  You might try this out.  Not sure it'll get you 4 hours, but with travel time, it'll be close.

  • Rich. One other thing. If you need a ride on Saturday, give me a call. 720-939-6348
  • Coach Rich, glad to hear you're in our neighborhood. My wife and I live in Highlands Ranch, just south of where you are at. I'm doing a sprint tri on Saturday up in Windsor--sorry to hear you are busy but with a very good excuse!! The ride route Steve is talking about is very good, nice climbing, and not too much traffic. Stay away from Morrison Road heading up to Evergreen. Beautiful ride, very popular with cyclists (I know, I used to do the climb alot). But traffic can be bad, especially with Memorial Day Weekend traffic (dangerous on tighter curves). Hope you enjoy your time here at Mile High! Any questions, give me a call: (303) 359-2328. Thanks! Jeff Meador
  • Steve, perfect, fueling up at SBUX to hit wifi then OTD for this ride. I "might" make a left in Evergreen and ride towards Mt Evans a bit if I feel I need more time.

    1. Diggin' the minivan . Like a transformers care and I feel damn sexy in it...
    2. Wanna get a 705 so I can follow GPS for routes like this.

    I'll call you about Saturday.

  • If you feel sexy in a minivan, then you certainly have no self-esteem problems.  image

Have fun.  Wish I could join you today.  Tomorrow will be a great ride, though.  Look forward to seeing you.  I'll be in my EN kit representin'  image
