1st ride on new Powertap Pedals. Anybody else riding them?

Installed them yesterday.  Synced them up to my Garmin 520.  Put the bike in the trainer and had my old trusty PT Pro hub rear wheel synced to my Garmin 910.  Rode for a few minutes at various wattages and they seemed to match pretty close given the smoothing times were not exactly the same on the 2 Garmin displays.  Today was first road ride.  When I started up the 520, it said the right pedal was not synced?  Didn't have time to diagnose that as the group ride was rolling out.  Looking at Garmin Connect data, it shows zero data from the right pedal.  Everything else looked normal.  So must have based everything off the left pedal.  Anyone else seen this and know whats up?  I did not run the rear Powertap wheel today, based on the short n=1 sample on the trainer.  Ran the pedal with Keo cleats(nearly new) and they worked fine, a bit of a loose fit, but no unintentional unclips.

  • Yes, I'm running the PT pedals and love them. So easy on all levels. Only thing is what you had happen has happened to me and for a few times couldn't figure out why until I read up on it. If you wake the pedals up first (spin them) and to both of them then turn on your garmin you should be fine. Otherwise, I guess it can only sinc with one.
  • Thanks Trent, I just pulled the battery out of the right pedal to "reboot" it. When I reinstalled, it synced to the left pedal, then to 520. All seems well for now. I bet yesterday, I put the battery in the right one first, then the left and the right never connected. Will see what happens goi g forward. So far like them. They are stiff and don't flip up when I uncoil at a stop. Other than this, alls well.
  • Congratulations!

I am using them and they appear to be accurate and somewhat problem free........no issues yet.  Have done both a century, 70+ miler and several trainer sessions with them and love them!

  • I talked to the guys at Powertap about the "right power meter missing" warning on my Garmin. They said there is some kind of pre check that works with a Joule computer but not a Garmin. They told me I should expect that warning every time and just to ignore it because everything is fine. I've never had any problems with the power measurement and I have learned to completely ignore that Garmin warning.
  • Thanks John,  I was getting a blinking red light on my right pedal prior to the "reboot", but now it is green and seems to connect like it should.  Before, I used the Powertap app on my iphone to check if i had the latest firmware update.  It said I had no right pedal as well.  After reboot, it connected too.  Funny thing is that my ride power today was about exactly where I expected it to be, so perhaps it did transmit, or the thing took the left pedal power and figure I must have been doing something with my right leg.  Garmin now shows both right and left leg power as I ride down the road.

  • I picked up the P1s and the 520 a few weeks back -- they're both great! The startup protocol with the pedals is a bit annoying. I either spin the pedals before powering the 520, or just cancel out of the power calibration. There's a firmware update available for my 520 - not sure if it covers the right-power-missing issue, but I suspect Garmin will fix it soon.
  • I have been riding with the P1 pedals for about four months. They have been easy to use. My only issue is in understanding how to get the watts readings every ride on the Joule+ I got to go with the P1 pedals. Sometimes I have to stop early on the ride and calibrate. I cannot seem to understand the pattern with this issue.
  • I've had them for 6 months or so and love them. They work really well. Just changed the batteries for the fist time this weekend. Took a few minutes to find lithium AAA batteries, but changing them was painless and took a minute or two. Way better than battery changing on a Powertap wheel.

I get the error message about the missing power meter on my Garmin 800 but just press the screen and the message goes away and power is calculated properly.

I've put them on to compare against my Computrainer and results are very close.
  • Ok, got it all going and on a 62 mile ride this morning, L/R balance was 50/50. That surprised me. Then garmin connect throws some new metrics at me. L/r torque effectiveness was 73/80. L/r pedal smoothness was 20/23. I googled those metrics and kinda understand what they are trying to measure, but don't find any references to what is poor, good, great. Balance is easy, but what do you guys know about the other two metrics? Thanks
  • Anyone ridden these pedals in the rain? Just wondering if there were any issues there? After traveling to CO with my rear zipp wheel in a big a$$ bulky box as I was renting, I was dreaming of these pedals. My pt wheel was updated a couple seasons ago and I have no reason to change other than portability between bikes. Which would kick BUTT.

Just like IM, it's in my head and poking me! Might have to start saving my pennies. image

Same questions here Dave, although my L/R balance is 52/48, which is surprising since I'm right foot-dominant.

Trish - I have ridden them in the rain, and they have been on my bike when it was on my car in rain, without a glitch.  I say get them!  The ease of changing between bikes is a huge benefit.
