Shoulder Pain

I felt something go wrong in my shoulder 2 weeks ago on a swim. I've been resting it since. Then this morning I tipped over on the bike, put my hand out, and now I'm right back in the pain. I have my 1st Sprint in 12 days. Do I just power through? Go 3 weeks without a swim? Thoughts?

  • I would suggest getting it checked out to see the source of the pain. Even if you race, it should be as a fun day of training as opposed to a true compete type of event in my opinion. Based on what the doc says, if you are not going to do any further damage to it, you can decide if you want to try and power through. If you are going to do more damage, I think the decision is made for you. Sorry to hear.
  • Sound advice. Which I'm going to ignore. I can live, I guess, with a DNF if I have too much pain. I can't live with a DNS. Not for my first one.
  • Definitely need to get it checked to see if you have a strained, partially torn, or completely torn rotator cuff. I've blown out both shoulders in the past (separately) -- able to complete the season, but at the expense of laying in bed at night unable to sleep well due to shoulder pain...took months to go away. PT got me back in the game and I still do some of the exercises religiously for prevention...and haven't had a problem for years -- point being is that you shouldn't assume it's career ending.
