IM Walking analysis

I had a hard time trying to figure out how to determine how much time I spent walking during my first Ironman race.

I played with Garmin Connect, exported the file to .tcx and looked at the underlying data, tried Training Peaks and finally Strava.

It seemed like a logical thing to want: "How many minutes did I spend going slower than X minutes per mile?"

Finally I figured it out by using Strava's "Pace Distribution" (this may be a "Premium" feature...I'm not sure).

When I looked at the Pace Distribution, it broke my run out into time spent at Zone 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

However, the paces don't show what I want to see, which is walking speed. The Zone 1 pace was too fast to show walking - it showed slow running or jogging and slower.

So, I changed my 5k time by clicking the blue link just below "Zone 6" and making my 5K time much slower than it really is so that my "Zone 1" showed true walking paces and Voilà!  It worked!  I could see how much time I spent at 15min/mile or slower or whatever I wanted to define as "walking" or "too slow".

Note: once you change your 5K pace and save, click your back button to get back to the Pace Distribution chart and then click "Refresh" or "reload" on the web page to update the chart. Don't forget to set your 5K value back to the correct number when you're done.
