Road bike rental in San Diego for race?

Slightly off topic, but hope to get some advice...

My son is planning to do Youth Nationals triathlon in San Diego this coming August.  We have relatives in the area.  It's a draft legal sprint-type race, so the rules are road bike with shorty-bars, just like ITU.  No TT bikes.

His road bike here is nothing special, but we do have some nice wheels he can use and shorty bars.  Because of the cost of bike transport, I've been considering trying to rent a bike in the SD area for a week or something, instead of transporting his not-so-special 20-year-old-and-already-jury-rigged-for-size frame (Transport would surely cost as much money as the frame is worth!  It's an ancient Trek 1500).  We can obviously transport wheels, pedals, saddle, and shorties. His Cervelo P1 is a 54, so he's obviously in the "normal" size range of bikes.

Anyone have any experience doing something like this?  Any experience with shops in the San Diego area specifically?

Thanks!

William

  • There are a number of bike shops in the San Diego area that will rent you bikes, I know that both Moment cycle sport (www.momentcyclesport.com) and B+L bikes (blbikes.com) rent, and I think that Hi-Tech bikes does too. Moment is my preferred but I don't know how the costs compare between all of those.

If none of those seem to work out, email me shannon.leigh.castle@gmail.com and I'm sure we can find him something-- I know a LOT of bikes down there.

  • Just a few weeks ago I rented a Cervelo from Nytro for $55/day. And I only had it out for two hours so they didn't bother charging me, which makes them pretty decent in my book.
  • Again, thanks! I'll have to look into exactly where some of these places are relative to where we're staying and racing too. Great tips!

  • I ended up renting a Cervelo S1 from Nytro. Great bike, and the price was reasonable, if not cheap. :-) they were a little persnickety, but not anything that would stop me from renting again.

The only problem is now I have road bike envy.
