Challenge Roth iron distance RE weekend

So here is the Challenge Roth race rehersal weekend.  It was a little early so I am going to do one more day (Sat.) of a RR to finish up the training before the taper.  I wanted to get some feedback from people who have done this race or want to give some good feedback on the training.  Thanks ahead of time.

  • Eric! I didn't know there were any other ENers going to Roth! I'll be there too! I do my RR this weekend (praying the predicted T-storms hold off). Can you give some color commentary on how you felt during your RR? How did your nutrition/hydration go? How did you feel coming off the bike and heading out onto the run? What was your plan vs execution? I'll take a look at your files, but without some context, it's a little hard to really give any feedback.

  • Nemo, that is so great that another ENr will be there. I will be there with my girlfriend, her family, and a few members from the REV3 Team. I am so excited. We will be staying in Nuremberg. Where will you be staying?
Ok so I do a skewed version of the training plan due to my work schedule so I did this RR as a volume weekend (sort of) then will do one more RR on Saturday alone. As far as how I planned vs. executed my plan, I did what I expected to do. Being that it was in the mountains, I had more elevation than our race course, but I really worked on no spikes (or rather tried to) on the climbs and kept consistent on the descents and flats. My nutrition was sound and I was really happy with that. I took one btl of nutrition an hour plus one gel an hour. Now the temps in the a.m. were not too bad but in the last hour or so I had to up the intake of fluid due to heat and stress. When I came off the bike, I did take about a 10' rest due to some issues that I deal with regarding my ankle (previous injury), but after that, I jumped into the run and felt good. I tried to stay in the heat and direct sun as much as poss. because I know that there is no shade on the run. I did notice my HR was higher than expected on the run so I need to adjust accordingly. I take PB Perform on the run and a gel an hour as well and that did great for me. Also I ordered an ice bag from Patrick and will try it out when I get it. This will aid me on the run with the sun exposure. I hope this helps and if you need any info on the race let me know.
  • It looks to me like you did a pretty good job. Yeah, your HR rose a bit at the end of that run, but you were also picking up the pace too. If you can keep yourself under control on the run you should be good to go. Oh- and I'm envious that you get to ride in the hills. I just love that area of NC. I'll be doing my RR out here on OBX where it's just flat and windy.

Are you bringing nutrition with you to Roth? Or do you plan on using what is on the course? The stuff they have is very different, so be sure you have factored that into your plan.

We are staying in Nuremberg as well. We arrive Tuesday and will be traveling with RaceQuest during race week. After the race we will rent a car and head to Chamonix, France for a little hiking in the Alps and hopefully to catch a stage or two of Le Tour. How about you?
  • I'm envious of y'all going to Roth. It might be the ONLY full iron-distance that's on my bucket list; well-along with Kona.
  • Nemo- I will be using my nutrition for the race. I haven't trained with their stuff so I don't want to make such a mistake thinking my body will like it. We will be renting a car early so we can drive ourselves around. Then after the race we will be flying from Munich to Swiss Alps for some fun and food. We def. have to get up while we are there. Good luck with your RR this week and I hope the wind doesn't kill you. I know I hate the wind.
Scott- Yeah I am pretty jacked about this and feel very fortunate to be able to do such a race.
  • Looking forward to your Race Reports along with the logistics. However, if I ever do it, I'll probably just get a slot from Race Quest which handles the lodging arrangements. Good luck!!
  • Where in the Alps will you be staying? And yes- we absolutely should try to get together. Will you be wearing an EN kit on the course? I will be wearing the EN Singlet and visor on (weather pending of course).
  • I will be wearing my REV3 Race Team kit. But will be sporting EN bottles. We'll talk more as it gets closer. We leave the 12th. Not sure where in the Alps we will be yet. I am not doing those logs, lol.
  • does the race still offer home stay option for racers ?   I emailed the race but they have not gotten back to me.

Not sure.  Getting a slot to the race is really hard.  The only way I managed to get in was through RaceQuest so my lodging was already booked through them.
