Mt. Whiteface NY Climb question(s)

Anyone ride up Mt. Whiteface before? TriBike or Road Bike?  Any thoughts, comments, advice?

I will be traveling up to Placid next weekend and intend on riding...one of the rides I would like is to do the Whiteface Climb. I'm trying to decide whether to bring my TriBike, Roadie, or both...If I can only bring one...and I'm just riding not training for anything particular...which would you bring?

Thanks!

  • For 15 years, all I had was a twitchy tri bike, and went up and done big, long and steep climbs without out too much trauma. Then last summer, I bought a really good road bike, and started doing the same climbs. No faster, but a lot more fun. Now I intend to use the TT only for races and very specific tri training. If it's just for fun, use the roadie, IMO
  • If you really are not training for anything, I'd take the Road bike. A couple of yrs ago I was there training for IMLP on my tri bike. I had ridden the Placid course several times and for a change went and climbed Whiteface one day. I did just fine on my tri bike... BUT, the day I was there it was pretty foggy and a little damp (I did it super early and had to climb under the gate which also meant no $$). The road surface is pretty sketchy for much of the decent, especially the top third. Tons of bumps and cracks and on wet rims my knuckles were pretty white from trying to hold on (and I'm the guy who usually LOVES to bomb down descents).

Summary, you'll be fine and survive on a tri bike, but for better control on the descent, I'd lean toward the road bike. But not worth taking two bikes for it...
  • Thanks Guys...I did Mt. Lemmon last year on a rental road bike...okay on way up...but nervy on the way down....I was leaning towards the road bike this time and will be happy to be on my own.

  • Ok...quick question which I should probably know the answer.........

    I'm currently running 50/34 with 10 speed 12/25 cassette....

I have the option of swapping out 12/28....

    Anythoughts? Preference?

    Thanks

  • Joe - totally depends on how strong you are on the bike. I went with a compact and 11-28 and it was a good call.
  • I've never complained about having too many gears while climbing. ..
  • I drove up the mountain while in Lake Placid last week. Epic ride for sure. I would use the road bike for sure.
