Renting Race Wheels

Hi Team!

Need some expert advice...I want to use race wheels at IMLP this year! I do not want to buy now but want to rent. I had put this on the back burner and now the wheels on racedaywheels.com are basically sold out. I can still get a ZIPP 808 w/powertap hub (which is good becasue I wanted to use power).... but it is a carbon clincher... however it comes with breaks- so that should be okay, correct? Is an 808 too aggressive for placid? I could then search to find a ZIPP 404 to use for the front. Will ask local triathletes but also will ask the team if anyone coming to placid who may have a wheel I could borrow/rent?

Other option is to use bontrager wheels from a local bikeshop- if I do that I would not be able to use power....not sure if I want to do that....but guess I could just go by HR?

Thoughts opinions/advice all welcome!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  • I recommend using whatever back wheel you have with an aerojacket disc cover and rent a 404 for the front.

I would just try to borrow a Front 404 or 808 from someone you ride with....even if it is a few (or a lot) years old, the difference is probably not worth the cost to rent.  Like Dan says, use the money that you would spend on renting wheels to get an Aerojacket from Wheelbuilder.  99% of the benefit of a disc at 5% of the cost.

  • Hey guys!! I probably should've mentioned that I have a Trek Speed Concept and I cannot use a disc jacket/wheelcover. Its one of the only bikes that it will just not work with....there is not enough room. I have gone back and forth many times with wheelbuilder....just won't work. I heard of some ways to "jimmy-rig" it....but there is still a chance it wouldn't hold and end up rubbing- so for my piece of mind I don't want to do that.....

  • Laura, do you have a PM in your current wheelset?

Yes, if you use the 808/carbon you will be good if you change out for the proper carbon brake pads. Just give yourself enough time to test out the setup prior to IMLP.

I would go with your 808 rental option - I think you will be solid on the course. The rear wheel 808 won't be a major issue in terms of stability.
  • I have a pair of 808 with powertap hub that i don't use. Let me change the battery tomorrow and check that it is working. I should be able to make room in my car for them if you need them. Aluminum rims. I'm going up to LP on Wednesday the 20th. Let me Know.
  • Rob- you totally just MADE MY DAY! If it's working and you have room in your car I would love to borrow them from you! I would pay you of course!! Front and rear correct? And just to ask your expert opinion....I have not ridden with wheels before but I should be find with 808's on the LP course correct? I am arriving on Wednesday as well so as soon as they are on I can play around a bit- and when my husband arrives on Thursday I am going to do the descent a few times!

Let me know- THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  • Laura - I changed the battery and my Garmin 510 picked up the signal right away. The tubes are flat and tyres are a bit worn. I have a 10 speed Dura ace cassette on the Hub but it's a 12-25 which is not ideal for LP unless you are sporting > 4W/kg.
So you will have to put on tubes with extenders, new tires, and a different cassette if you want.
  • Hey Rob!

THanks so much for checking- I am trying to find someone who could change the cassette ect in LP. If I can arrange for all that to happen could you bring them up with you on Wednesday? Thanks again for offering this!

  • Just let me Know. There are regular tubes and tires on the wheels that look ok. Checked them out today.

Laura, any LBS in the Lake Placid area can handle changing a cassette in just a few minutes. I think it is a smart and economical investment to purchase a cassette chain whip and a lock ring nut. Search "change cassette" in youtube. You will see it's much ado about nothing!

  • GREAT news!! Placid Planet said they can change the cassette and get it on my bike so it is goood to go!! YES!

@Rob- Do you have an ETA for placid on Wednesday? And do you think I need to buy a new tire for either of the wheels?? I seriously cannot tell you how much I appreciate this!!

@David- thank you for that advise! Got a hold of Placid Planet and they were able to put me in for an appt!!!

  • hopefully at 5 pm Wed. The house I'm renting is one block from Placid Planet. I'll check the tires.
  • The wheels have tubes with extensions and a pretty good set of Conti 4000s. So you should just need the cassette.
  • Rob,
This is PERFECT!! I talked to placid planet again and they said whenever I can get the wheels there on wednesday they will take care of it!
So if you want to text me when you arrive I could swing by and pick them up- or you can just drop them at the shop- whatever is easier for you!!! My number is 860-508-8321
Also please let me know what I can pay you for a "borrow fee"!!
    YOU'RE THE BEST!!!
