Heat rash

Has anyone dealt with heat rash recently? I have managed to get it for the first time ever right before I drop into IMLou training. It started on my lower back and has wrapped around my side to the front...mainly near my waist.

Should I lay off the workouts till this heals? Mainly worried about running in the heat and irritating it more.

  • I say watch the runs, hopefully you are ok swimming and cool enough on the bike.

Any info on what caused the onset by any chance? A tiny part of me is worrying you did a run on a hot day with a belt or soe other devise that trapped the heat in.
  • I get a heat rash on my legs EVERY time I train in the heat. Heat being 95-110 degrees out. I get it under my cycling shorts on my thighs and on my calves/lower legs under my compression socks. It never hurts and does not bother me. It does not fully go away for 3-5 days. I have always been sensitive to the sun and heat. I was covered in it after racing in Kona. Does yours bother you? Mine just looks ugly but I don't feel it.
  • I really haven't worn anything unusual...seemed to develop after a 4 hour bike run on Saturday in my usual tri shorts. It's been hot and humid in Atlanta but I should be used to it by now. Due to the location of it around the waistband it is very irritated. It has a prickly sensation to it that stings. Laying off runs for a few days just to get it under control.
  • Training in the Florida heat I always get some heat rash after the rides start going north of 3.5 to 4 hours, mostly on my thighs and low back. I've never worried about it, the redness goes away in about 4 days then comes back again on my next long ride. I've never let it keep me from training, I'm just careful not to scratch it during or just after a ride because it will really start stinging. Hope this helps, good luck.
  • Thanks everyone, quick update as I've now had s visit to the doctor. I miss diagnosed myself....worse than heat rash...its shingles. Lots of stress and fatigue have probably led me here. This is a first for me....I can continue to train but will back off for now to let healing begin. Need to get healthy before I drop into the IM plan next week.
