Blueseventy skull cap - cut the strap?

I have a Blueseventy neoprene skull cap that I've never needed to use. I'm considering using it for IMC if the lake temp stays around 62 (if much warmer, I'll just double-cap).

The cap has a chin strap that is pretty tight. I know some people cut the straps off. For those who have used these, what worked best for you?

  • I use mine for 60 and below with the strap. If it's cold enough for a neoprene cap, you want the coverage. For 62 I would use a silicon cap.
  • Yeah, the strap can be an irritant. But consider this, if you are wearing the cap to help stay warm. 25% of each heart beat flows through your carotid arteries, which are uniquely exposed (along with the accompanying jugular veins) in the little area below the point of your jaw just below your ear (where people are always checking for pulses to see if someone is dead?). The straps come down over that spot and help more than you might imagine in keeping you warm.

  • Once again bowing down to the knowledge that AT just dropped on us...
  • Another option...I've seen some neoprene squid lids that have velcro straps for adjustability; can't remember which brand though.

The one I got 15 years ago has a Velcro strap ... So I didn't realize the modern design does not feature such an adjustment! I can see how that would be an issue. Here's a link to the company I got mine from...Pro Motion wetsuits in Oregon. They've been around so long, their web site is wetsuit.com!
