2017 Ironman Texas Announced -- 4/22/2017

So the new course is up...and a new date as well. Still gonna be hot! Race details online here.

Swim = Same

Bike = FREEWAY

Run = Same

Here's a shot from what part of the Hardy Toll Road will look like...if you want fast, you got it. This has to be the epitome of the "urban" Ironman...

    Hardy Toll Road. Fast, flat, stay locked in aero bars all day long!

    ย This has to be the epitome of the "urban" Ironman...

    Coach - we do not exactly enjoy the same definition of Urban!!! This is not urban!

  • I was kinda hoping they would keep the swim course from this year's race.

    As for the Hardy, yeah, fast and flat. There's some construction on there right now too, that HOPEFULLY will be done by next year. They're also in the process of changing over to a "no cash" pay system, which means they may be tearing down toll plazas in the near future. The road itself is surrounded by trees, but I expect to be fully exposed to the sun for the full duration of the ride. I'm also going to miss the ride back into the Woodlands at the end. I like that part of the old course.
  • Tom, How did you sign up?ย

  • Brent,

    I participated this year. When you check in, they typically allow you to sign up for next year's race. This year they only allowed you to put your name on a list to be notified. When they announced this year's race to the public, I got an email allowing me to sign up.

    Texas typically doesn't fill up until close to the end of the year, so I wouldn't worry too much about trying to get in.

    I must say I'm a little upset at the new Westin Hotel. It just opened up before this year's race and it's right at the finish line. We stayed there and it was a great experience. I called to get a reservation for next year. They've upped the rates and now they want the money up front and it's not refundable. Just not very nice!
  • I love that you say the road is surrounded by trees...what triathlete EVER NOTICES what's around them when riding??!!! image
  • Haahaa. Good point Coach!

    For what it's worth, I drove the Hardy yesterday, with the intention of riding it next April, and was paying close attention to the surface. Great surface, except for the long seams that you can get your tire stuck in pretty easy. As long as you pay attention to where those seams are, and you don't move over into one when you're trying to pass someone, it should be a great road. Some people mentioned concerns with expansion joints, I didn't see much problem there. Yes they have them, and yes, there are a few long elevated sections where they will be repetitive, but that's for about half a mile at a time, and thus it's probably not a problem. The toll plazas that I mention above were all torn down. Shouldn't be an issue. I wouldn't be surprised if they still have some construction going on somewhere on the route next year. I think it wont influence the race, but there may be a few places where you'll have to be a bit more careful about concrete barriers and bumpy roads for short distances.
  • I signed up! Any suggestions on places to stay?
  • @Brent, The Waterway Marriot and the Westin are right near the finish line, but are probably the most expensive, and fastest to sell out. The Hyatt Centric is pretty close too, but I think it may be expensive and small (I've never been in there). The Residence Inn and Hilton Garden Inn, both on Six Pines are still walking distance to the finish line (and would probably be my personal first choice). After that, you've got the Residence Inn and Courtyard, both on Lake Front Circle that are good, and not too far from the finish line, probably too far to walk before the race, but not too bad of a walk if you're not racing. Beyond that, most of the hotels are driving distance. If you've got one in particular in mind and aren't sure about it, feel free to ask, and I'll check it out.
  • La quinta north. Close but need to drive.

    For cheap, look close to Conway.
  • Conroe, not Conway, right Robin?
  • Are you signed up next year Robin? I know you've got a bigger race between now and then, but I hope you make it down here again.
  • will see what I feel like after that one in October.

    may take 2017 off from full Ironman races.

    when might Texas fill up ?

  • With all the craziness from this year, and then moving to April (cooler, and wetsuit legal, maybe) for next year, and then the change to the bike course, there are a lot of variables in the air. But in the past it's filled up in October/November for general registration.
  • Chris, I am looking at the best western plus, it is located in Conroe.
  • @Brent, I've never stayed there, but that location on 242 and I-45 has a lot of stuff around it (restaurants, Walmart, bike shop). The only down side to it is that it's really not a pedestrian/bike friendly area. Lots of cars, and not really a good bike lane on 242 until you get a few blocks west of I-45.
  • ugh. This race was tough to prepare for when it was in May.
    The bike course does look fast though.

    Of course, the bike course was super fast this year. My fastest time ever!image
  • what are the odds of a Wetsuit swim with the new date?
  • Better than 50% that it will be wetsuit legal. I usually do the CB&I sprint in Lake Woodlands, which is the first weekend of May, and it has been wetsuit legal 3 out of the 4 times I've done it.
  • here's a link to the water temps over the last few years from that sprint tri:

  • Chris, thanks for that - very interesting and great news for me!
  • I drove the Hardy again last week, and had another thought to share. At the south end of the Hardy, there are about 11 miles of road that run parallel to train tracks. These train tracks are about 20' away from the road. The trains that I've seen there are going reasonably slow, approximately 20 mph. Its possible that some unfortunate souls will be riding along with that train, and all of its banging and clanging and horn blowing, for that full 11 miles before we turn around. I cant see that there's anything to be done about it, other than just being aware that its a possibility, and sucking it up.

    But there are a couple questions to ask:
    1. Has anyone ever ridden close enough to a train to get a draft?
    2. Is 20' away going to give us that opportunity?
    3. If 20' away is too far away for a clean draft, will the train passing through create any other sort of strange localized wind patterns?
    4. Am I obsessing too much about trains?
  • Train draft. Cool.
  • 7 years into the race and IMTX 2017 is like a brand new Ironman. I will be reading next year's race reports with interest.
  • I'm looking forward to it. This will be my first full Ironman. Trying to keep an open mind to everything around me and enjoy the day.
  • I drove the hardy everyday for 3 years, the trains will not be an issue. Trees in the distance there will only be shade from 6pm until 7 am!

    If its a typical day the wind will be helping from s to n
