hydration vest

Does anyone use one of these for the IM marathon? i.e one specifically made for marathon or ultras, 1.5L bladder and can carry a bottle/flask or two

Seems like a good idea....

  • Why weigh yourself down, to say nothing of the extra time in T2, and the extra layer of clothing, when there's an infinite supply of water, electrolyte solution, gels, etc no more than 10 minutes away?
  • Some do... But... The Ironman Marathon is a buffet every mile ... At a minimum you will have a choice of water, gatorade, coke, redbull, broth...Makes no sense to carry anything unless there is something NOT on the course that you absolutely want/need... Go minimal my friend, go fast!
  • I use one on training runs but not for the IM marathon because I have a buffet of stuff basically every mile for the IM. If I had specific needs that were not provided by the buffet, I would consider it, but I basically live off the course. For training I love it so that I don't have to try and figure out where every water fountain is along the way.
  • i ran with one a few times and got some impressive rug burns on the neck from the bag rubbing. Honestly can't see any real advantage to the vest unless your gameplan is to run right past every aid station without stopping. I would get one if ever I signed up for an unsupported ultra or something.
  • Similar to Scott, I have a Camelbak that I use for training runs over 2 hours, but I don't use it during an IM marathon. I carried bottles for my first 1.5 IM marathons (I ditched the bottles half way through the second). They were heavy and basically a PITA. Since then I've relied on on-course nutrition. Be sure to train with whatever the on-course options are so your stomach is as prepared as your legs.
  • x10... I often wear a hydration pack for my long runs... But why run 26.2 miles with all that extra weight...   And it would make me too hot for an IM race and there are just too many easy opportunities to get stuff off the course.

  • Agree with everyone, no need for vest in IM.

If you do however want a vest for training, or you decide to do an Ultra, my recommendation is the Solomon Skin3 5 Set.
  • Ok thanks everyone- I replaced the wallet back into my pocket.  No hydration vest for me.
