Chafing

It's Texas. It's hot and humid. If I want to get any running in outside during most months here, I have to run at 4am (no joking, that's when I've been getting up for my running!).

I frequently get chafed under my arm, from my arm swinging, and sometimes on my butt too (I wear tri shorts (desotos) to run in all the time).

For my tri shorts, I can usually get away with some body glide on my sit bones area to prevent it. For longer runs, eventually that wears off and I get chafed. But for my underarm area, it doesn't work too well with all the sweat from the heat and humidity.

I'm looking for ideas on:

1) how to prevent it, and

2) how to treat it when it does happen.

Hit me with your best shot!

  • I use Aquafor every single day. It works way better than bodyglide and it works well after chafing to heal and protect the area.
  • I had a similar problem with chafing a few inches below my arm pit a few summers ago (bricks when wearing a cycling jersey or tri top) I found this stuff in a drugstore in the Philippines while traveling called "Tegaderm Transparent Adhesive Film Dressing". Its the large transparent film they use to hold IVs in place, its waterproof, thin, and I would forget it was there. Keep it away from hair as much as possible though. Hope that helps...
  • I've used aquafor and Vaseline with great success. I live in Dubai and the heat and humidity are off the charts. If I do any run over 12K, I am in danger of chafing under the arm.
  • I have no idea how body glide works for anyone! I've tried it a few times and have suffered every single time.

I can't say enough about Tri-slide. That stuff is awesome. Applied liberally prior to 4 ironmans and no problems with chafe. I use it for all of my big training days too. It's easy to apply. EN actually has a 25% discount on the product as well.

How to treat it? No idea, prior to Tri-slide I just beared the discomfort until it eventually went away.
  • I'm with DJ on the tri-slide. love that stuff especially for exiting a wetsuit. On a comic note: beware applying it over tile floors. I used it before a local HIM with a wetsuit swim last year. I forgot something and returned to the bathroom in a rush and slid all the way across the room and fell into the tub--nothing hurt but my pride fortunately...
  • TriSlide is a sponsor...and spray application for the win. Aquaphor would be my second choice...industrial strength stuff. I think Body Glide is a legacy product that won't go away....
  • Have you considered shaving your arm pits? I use a clippers on mine to at like a #2 or #3. Try it. image

Yes, considered it. The rubbing spots are all outside of the "hair zone", so I don't believe shaving will impact my issue.

It hasn't been as bad lately, with a liberal application of body glide. We'll see if the tri slide helps more!

  • not a dude, but I use 2toms. I know a gal that uses it for butt chafe (and she's not a chubby girl by any means)

I use it in under the bra, on my collar bones, under the straps, and in the nether region post body glide. Anyplace I used to chafe or get raw. It is a roller or you can get a powder for your feet. No issues since. If Triglide doesn't work, give it a go. It's on amazon...
