Hilly HIM
I am taking part in my first HIM on 3rd September. The bike and run route are hilly. On the bike there are two 10km climbs with switch back descents. Three questions:
Do i focus my training on hilly training routes
Do I use a tri-bike or regular one as only a third of route is typical time trial road. I currently plan to use my tri bike as it is a better machine but might be a little unstable on the technically difficult descents.
Do i adapt my zones fir hills. It is much harder to keep heart rate stable on these type of courses

this is a link to steady riding the EN way to flatten out hills. Read it and then ask more questions if needed. Ride the bike you will be most comfortable on. If you won't feel comfortable in aerobars on those descents and climbs and it's more then 50% of the race then the road bike might be a better choice. The bike you choose should have appropriate gearing for climbing so you can spin at close to your normal cadence while climbing and not be forced to Mash on your pedals at low rpms which may make it hard for you to run afterwards.
@Ciaran do you have a website / course link we can check out for this race?

I think i might have made a strategic error training on my tri-bike with full crankset. At least it has 12/28 rear cassette! I have a training bike with compact crankset but more limited gear ratios (8 only- Giant defy 3 with Sora gear set). At this stage I'll stick with the tri bike and be careful on switch backs. My bike handling is good.
Thanks again for the considered analysis.

Can't wait to see the strava files from your experience.
Good luck,
