I know a few people who have done it. It's a pretty small affair, based on what I have heard. HITs is a small promotor. There history/expertise is horse shows and events.
I did the HITS Napa Half in the Spring and really liked it. It's definitely local, so don't go expecting Ironman type productions. The idea of the HITS series is that you can show up on a particular weekend and participate in almost any event you want. Sprint, Olympic, Half, Full, swim only, aquabike, - almost any flavor you want, and they are happy to accommodate.
For my event, the roads were pretty beat up, but the swim and run course were great. The organizers, volunteers were all super nice and helpful. It was well organized and there were enough people in the event to make it fun. Winning my AG may have affected my memory
I signed up for next year's event because they were offering it at $100 for a very limited time. Great price for a half. Of course, IM Texas just moved up their race which now conflicts with this, so I may not do it after all.
Anyway, I would give this a thumbs up. Always good to give the IM guys a little competition.
I did Napa HITS HIM in 2012&'13. Really liked it despite the "challenging"bike (changed after '12). And 50 degree swim. Was my second Triathlon and First HIM. Would love to go back but date always a conflict
I raced the sprint there in 2014. Good people, event was run pretty well. I remember that part of the swim was along the shoreline and was shallow. Some people ran that side of the course. I just stayed in deeper water and swam it. They run SC on one day and LC on the other, so a lot of people raced both.
