Tom Trout Macro Thread

Hi Tom,

This is your very own “Macro Thread” where you and I can discuss any questions you may have about the Triathlon Season Roadmap (TSR) that I created for you here. This is also a space where we can discuss any big picture, season planning, race schedule and other related issues you may have going forward.

Welcome aboard!

  • I'll need some guidance on a few things:

    1) I noticed week 10 of 12 is a big bike weekend. I have no problem with handling this volume, but it seems like a lot only 14-15 days out from race day. In your experience, has this translated well to feeling rested and snappy on race day.......it must considering your bike splits and Rich's bike splits!  I also noticed that week 18 in the 20 week plan is a bit different than week 10 in the 12 week plan.  Thoughts on following one protocol or the other for 2 weeks out from race day?

Week 10 in 12 week plan

    Day 1 - Friday - 90 minute swim,112 mile ride, 60 minute run

    Day 2 - Saturday - 112 mile ride, 30 minute run

Day 3 - Sunday - 2 hour run (split run)

Week 18 in 20 week plan

    Day 1 - Friday - 90 minute swim, 112 mile ride, 60 minute run

    Day 2 - Saturday - 112 mile ride

    Day 3 - Sunday - 4 hour (80 mile ride)

    2) Also wondering if you  have any suggestions for managing a recent development with my IM swimming. I seem to swallow water more than I used to...or perhaps swallow air. I never had a problem with excess gas/air in my gut in my first 8 Ironmans. However, in the last 3 Ironmans I have had lots of gastrointestinal distress starting about 15 minutes after swim exit and extending about 3-4 hours into the bike. I have had to hold WAY back on the bike to help it clear (usually burping and farting). This NEVER happens to me in a half ironman, and only seems to affect me in swims more than 45 minutes or so. Bottom line: I'm thinking it may be my rotation (not enough), flexibility (not enough), waining strength (as an aging athlete), or simply taking the swim to hard (although it doesn't feel like it at all). My swims for all 11 Ironmans have been between 56-59 minutes....very consistent there.

    3) Lastly, what are your thoughts on incorporating strength training or core work into the plan at this point? I haven't done any strength (weights, etc) or core work in the last 18 weeks.
