Castelli T1 Stealth

Anyone raced in this shirt? I acquired one and did a ride and long run in it and really enjoyed it. I'm not 100% sure I can swim with it in non wetsuit race as IMCHOO is typically non wetsuit. I've never used anything but sleeveless before and was wondering if just rolling from the swim through the run is typical for this setup? I do have a skinsuit I can put over top for the swim but truthfully I"m not even sure that would be necessary as this shirt is skin tight and doesn't really restrict shoulder movement. I'm not the best swimmer 1hr 10min IM swimmer with wetsuit and I did IMCHOO last year with my sleeveless shirt and skinsuit. I'm thinking of just putting this on pre swim and rolling through the course with it.

Any advice or past experience with this would be appreciated.

  • I'd put it on during t1. Takes two seconds. Literally.
  • I used one at Challenge St Andrews- it was a bit of a struggle getting it on but probably would have been easier had I practiced it while wet, also I was cold so that didn't help.  I am still deciding whether or not to wear it under my wetsuit for IMMT. I have swam with one under my wetsuit before without difficulty.  The material/stitching is a bit fragile so I don't think it would last very long if you swim with it regularly (mine is starting to pull apart in the armpits a tiny bit- and I am not a big guy)

  • I have used one in several races this year. Love it. I leave it on under my wetsuit, but half zipped (so the zipper doesn't cause chafing). I have no issues with shoulder mobility/restriction during the swim (qualified statement in that I have big shoulders with limited range of motion baseline). However, I find the material to be very stretchy.

I would vote for wearing it under your wetsuit in the race and remove the likelihood of a T1 cage match putting it on with wet skin. Zip it up on your run during T1 and you are off...
  • Castelli kit is legit. I raced it one for Kona and it was epic. I think there are exceptions for these race tops in non-wetsuit races.

    Hope that helps!

  • I will be bringing mine...but not sure what I will do. At Maryland 70.3 this year I tried it for the first time. I attempted to put it on in T1 and it was difficult. I felt like I was fighting to get fabric over sticky skin as I was still wet....not sure if that takes practice however. I think it's a good idea to have it on under the wetsuit however.

Side question....what about the heat. I planned to have my tri suit on all day...but putting the Castelli top on OVER another top, I wonder if you don't get to heated up if the temps are high and humid (which many of us have seen lately.) anyone comment on that?
  • Dawn,

I'd recommend wearing under the wetsuit and not wearing another top underneath it.
