Anything I should know about IM wave start swims?

I have completed 2 IM's now and both were a mass start.  This year (next week), will be my first wave start full IM.

Any helpful hints for me to consider...or is it simply like a 70.3, but double the distance.

Unfortunately my wave, which will contain all females 40+ is the last heat.  I don't like this fact as it naturally puts me out on the course later in the day.  Also, I haven't counted however all ladies 40+ and greater must be a decent number of people.

Thanks!

  • Hi Dawn,

Nothing special about a wave start. It's like a mass start, only with a smaller mass. image

The interesting thing is starting in the last wave. I have been stuck doing that twice at Oceanside. The benefit is that you likely be passing people all day. The race takes a lot longer to stretch out when you start at the back, but it lets you target slower folks and bob and weave through them. Mentally, this can be a very positive experience.

The negative is the fast people are going to finish much sooner and the finish line is different experience. It's kind of like showing up very late for a party.

Other than that, I think it great way to start a race.
