Ironman PERFORM - who's heard of it?

Apparently a case is arriving on my doorstep any minute now:

Dear Ford Ironman Lake Placid Athlete,

Ironman® and PowerBar® are reaching out to you with an exciting annoucement about the next step in their long-standing global partnership. As a triathlete, you're looking for a sports drink that provides enhanced performance benefits from a proven industry leader. Beginning on June 8, a new premium sports drink, called Ironman PERFORM™, will be available for purchase. Developed by the sports nutrition experts at PowerBar and tested by PowerBar Team Elite members, Ironman PERFORM is designed for athletes, like you, who demand a sports drink made with ingredients that help you push your limits and maximize energy delivery.

Ironman PERFORM sports drink features state-of-the-art C2MAX carbohydrate blend, found to deliver 20- to 50-percent more energy to
muscles and improve endurance performance by 8 percent. Ironman PERFORM also enhances performance by delivering essential electrolytes, including 190 mg of sodium per serving, to replenish what athletes lose in sweat and to help avoid skeletal muscle cramps and dehydration. This convenient, ready-to-drink beverage is made with natural flavors and without the use of high fructose corn syrup. Ironman PERFORM is available in three light, great tasting flavors - Lemon-Lime, Orange Mango and Mixed Berry - to help encourage athletes to maximize fluid consumption during exercise. You'll have the opportunity to experience all flavors at the event.

Ironman PERFORM will serve as the official sports drink for the following events in 2010: Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island, Ironman 70.3 Racine, Rohto Iroman 70.3 Miami, Ford Ironman Lake Placid, Ford Ironman Louisville, Ford Ironman Wisconsin, Ford Ironman Florida and Ford Ironman Arizona. Additionally, both the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship and Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 events will include Ironman PERFORM on-course.

  • Its free so it has to be good.

  • Sounds like they are convincing you to be part of their grand experiment on age group athletes.
  • Well at least they are giving you a free case so you can check it out before race day!!! Nope, haven't heard anything about it. Hmmmmm, I wonder if their only distribution channel is going to be via internet sales. That would suck. But if it's what they are going to have at the race- they kinda guarantee folks will buy it in prep.
  • I got the same email as did all Louisville, Placid, Wisconsin, Fl, Kona, etc athletes got. Sounds like this is what they are going to have on the courses so thanks to them for letting us try it. Pretty cool!
  • I musta missed that memo!!!
  • The thought of all this product showing up in the mail...it's like a Dharma drop or something. Oh sorry, still processing the Lost finale over here...
  •  Dharma drop- love it! . May try it for run, but will stick to Infinit for  bike ( when it arrives)

  • The new Ironman PERFORM bevarage will be the official sports drink for Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island, Ironman 70.3 Racine, Rohto Ironman 70.3 Miami, Ford Ironman Lake Placid, Ford Ironman Louisville, Ford Ironman Wisconsin, Ford Ironman Florida and Ford Ironman Arizona in 2010. Plus both the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship and Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 events will include Ironman PERFORM on-course.

Apparently we'll all be learning to love it. Good thing I didn't buy any more Gatorade Endurance. I had really grown to like the stuff!
  • Sorry- I have not received that same e-mail.
  • Well, this explains why Gatorade has dropped their sponsorship of pre-race swims. I guess after IMCDA, IM is tossing them out and branding their own product. You can see where this is going...another extension of the brand into a new market area. It's down the road, but I hope I get a free case for IMAZ...haven't seen that memo yet.
  • I haven't gotten that email for IMWI, but I'd certainly take them up on it if I did.
  • Power Bar's other sports drink isn't too bad. Pretty digestable on long bike rides, although it's been a long time since I used it. I'm willing to try the new stuff on a couple runs just to make sure I can run with it if the situation becomes necessary at LP.
  • I got the e-mail as well. So is it a great marketing idea or just smart to see if we can stomach it before race day use? What ever it is I am glad they are taking gatorade off the race tables. The pasty and sticky feeling is so irritating that I try to avoid it when I can. I have gotten to were I take the time to grab water to dilute it as I run. Free is good too!
  • No notification here

  • No email here, but I did find a case of the stuff at my doorwith no letter or explaination or anything.

A box of powder stuff showing up on your doorstep with no explanation?  Hmmmmmm, step away from the box!!!!!!

  • Oh no! No Gatorade bottle to meet at ???? This is chaos!

Lville folks got the email-- I'll have to com endear a few bottles in the name of taste testing
  • We got the e-mail and the case arrived last week, liquid not powder so heavy enough they must have forked over some postage. The bottles are orange-mango flavor, kind of a citrus flavor, but I like it better than the Gatorade Endurance. I do like buying stuff in bulk powder form and don't know if this is available yet. Used it on some 2 and 3 hour rides this weekend and did fine. I want to see what the $ is before making up my mind.
  • Will have to recheck my email to see about getting my free case! 11 weeks to IMLOU!!!
  • I just happened by a GNC store here in Savannah and they have a whole display of the new Gatorade products. They have a three stage deal with Perform being the training piece. They also have a pre-race formula and a recovery drink. The Perform has a lot more sodium and potassium than previous formulas but I haven't done a side by side comparison. I am going to compare it to my Infint formula and will try it this afternoon. It appears to have a lot more sugar than the Infinit with 41g of dextrose and sucrose.

It should be available at Dick's Sporting Goods soon according to the GNC guy.
  • Orange-mango? Sounds interesting.
  • Brina Shea, over in a thread at ST listed the items side by side....Ironman Perform is basically Powerbar Endruance at nearly twice the price per oz.  - Shocking WTC would slap a brand name on a product and jack up the price

Ironman Perform based on suggested Retail will pencil out to 7.45 cents per OZ while Powerbar Endurance works out to 4.8 cents per oz.

Here are the two products side by side Ironman Perform Listed First. Magnesium most be very expensisve

    Serving Size: 1 scoop (makes 8oz) / 8oz

    Calories: 70 / 70

    Total Carbohydrates: 17g / 17g

    Sugars: 10g / 10g

    Sodium: 190mg / 190mg

    Potassium: 10mg / 10mg

    Magnesium (DV%): 4% / 2%

  • Nice research!! I'll be interested to hear from folks who received the product on a taste test comparison. Would be a lot cheaper to train with the Powerbar Endurance stuff!
  • Thanks Hayes ... sounds about right, 55% additional markup to have an MDOT on it.

The vast majority of my calories come from my pre-made feed bottle on the bike all day. I only take in a very small amount of gatoraide during the run and will only take a small about of this stuff in, so I'm not all that worried about the change.

I can understand why this would significantly impact people that planned to rely on only on-course nutrition, but I was under the impression that most of EN had their own infinit or something similar they used.
  • Go figure. Got home from work tonight and voila- two cases on my doorstep for Providence 70.3 it looks like. Weird. image

  • Got my box today and used one on the long run.  Not bad, but I'll stick with infinit on the bike for sure.

    Dave

  • Got mine box today as well (unfortunately after my long run). I'll give it a try next week.
  •  Got mine today and tried it after my long run.  It was good and I will use it on my runs and stick to my regular stuff on the bike.

  • All nutrition aspects aside, has anyone else noticed that this stuff leaves a nasty, orange stain on your water bottles and the rubber part of my fuel belt bottle cap? Don't forget to brush your teeth after every workout!

Has anyone compared the powdered version of Gatorade to the pre-mixed kind for a price/nutrition comparison? I'd be willing to bet that Gatorade cranks up the cost when they mix it for you and put it in a fancy bottle...
  • I tasted notes of pomegranate and eucalyptus with a slightly gingery finish

Seriously, thanks Hayes for the tip on the Endurance vs. Ironman product comparison.  I've been looking for an excuse to dump Cytomax as my boilerplate, non-Infinit sports drink solution for pre/post ride and pre-race.  I'll probably get a can of Endurance when I'm at the REI some time soon.  Just can't afford to use Infinit except for on the bike.  I've had the provided box of free drink for about a week and I've used it on a couple runs with good success.  No GI issues, as long as I've also switched it off with flasks of water on my fuel belt.

    Eric
