over reaching?

so I did that FTP work out this am and was not able to reach my numbers for the  4' at zone 5. x 3  (did a bunch of 1' at zone 5 instead of 4') My heart rate zoomed up as well.  I am also having insomnia and my resting heart rate is crazy...  normal is about 54, I'm running up to 77 although closer to 59 and yesterday was 53.  I did do a hard run yesterday with some hill repeats...

Question:  this week (Thursday runs at lower intensity?  ride on weekend at lower intensity?)  recommendations for week 14

I have that Mooloolaba race coming up and a bunch of work in office... and travel for work... My thought is cut it back a bit on intensity... I'm at 13th week of full (intermediate) ending on October 9.  Night shift Thursday and day shift Sunday.

Travel next week 24th through 26th to give lectures in Brownsville... forget working out except for a jog now and then... Pack stuff up over the weekend of 27 and 28 (no ER shifts)  Intense heavy work i office on 29th and travel that evening to Australia.  I think I am a bit overbooked on work and will not be able to overtrain!  I can do a lot of swimming next weekend barring bad weather....  I am so looking forward to that!   I love my bike but right now it is not loving me

  • Hi Patricia - the same things have happened to me and I have watched Anna struggle with it. It usually seems to be fatigue related. I typically see it in my HR... there are days that it just runs 10-15 bpm high and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do to control it. Sometimes when I am running and it is out of control, I will get stopped at a stoplight and it falls; after that it behaves more normally. Other times it's wonky the whole day. Anna has the issues with hitting the numbers on her bike. RPE is off the charts and her power meter doesn't agree, sometimes we both have issues with sleep quality during the peak training times. She also starts feeling flushed or having training-related hot flashes. Sometimes it is not purely the training load, but the combination of work, life and training.

For me, the key is always to try to get some recovery time. I will take a day off, follow it by something(s) at very low intensity and then I will do a workout that is a confidence builder. A little rest followed by a confidence building workout usually gets me on track.

Don't be discouraged!! You are balancing a lot of stuff. Resting is a critical part of training.

    Good Luck!
  • thank you! the hot flashes have been HORRIBLE as well. thanks for filling me in!
  • Hi Patricia - here is the link to Anna's topic on some of the symptoms... http://members.endurancenation.us/Forums/tabid/57/aft/21373/Default.aspx#230912

  • yep, familiar with this. I don't drink much alcohol, maybe once a week if at all... but it most definitely makes it worse. Good to know about this being related to overtraining. I think that is a very valid comment. The frequency has increased significantly. thanks for the link.
  • Patricia...thanks for checking in...and thanks for Rich/Anna for speaking up. I think you need to choose -- intensity or volume....but with your work load you can't do all of that.

Given Vineman, I don't think you need to do a lot of volume...it's there... I'd rather you keep your workouts under 30' (Swim), 45' (run) and 90' (bike) until september..then we can explore volume.

So if you feel good, you can do the intensity. If you don't feel good, dial in the Zone 2.

    Make sense?

  • Thank you so much, Coach! Sage advice.... I'm thinking I can hurt myself more than I can help myself by persisting. Bike workout was good this am. hit numbers and had skipped the run workout yesterday. shortened ride to half. will run/swim tomorrow.
  • Nice...you are so fit right now. Kona demands freshness!!
  • so, past week has been a bummer with bronchitis and sinusitis. I'm sure it is due to the kid I saw in the ER last week! although it I was at risk with overreaching.

I had to shut it down... have done one run of 6 miles and one delightful OWS in cool water today, since Wednesday. I was working out of town past few days anyway so I think 'll chill before getting on the plane on Monday. I hope this thing gets better soon! Yuck! right before Mooloolaba!

too hot here to run while sick...

  • Bummer that you have this extra fatigue, but that means that you are ready to rest. Enjoy the trip and simply do your best. There's still a lot of good work to do across the rest of this year! image

    Travel safe,
