Major Site Upgrade...Complete!

Our team worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that we have the most up-to-date version of our software. In true EN fashion, we had two race rehearsals and even some "live" issues....but we stayed in the box and here we are!!!

If you have feedback or find issues, etc, please let us know by replying to any of our messages, as well as posting to this thread. We promise to squash them all!!!

**OPEN ITEMS**  (Last Updated 09/23/2016)

  • Site load time needs to be analyzed / improved.
  • Forum preferences not accessible (to update signature) -- appears that forum software update to match site software is in Beta. As soon as it's live / safe, we'll update.
  • Site search doesn't need to pull in user details, missing older content. Might need to re-index site at off-peak hours.
  • Fix page size on mobile devices

** SOLVED ITEMS **
  • Side header inverted  [08/25/2016 ]
  • Word wrap in dashboard funky [08/25/2016 ]
  • Main navigation should be left aligned [08/26/2016]
  • Posting to Forum is Critical Error  (note, just go back in browser and re submit, should be good).
  • Mobile pages unable to login.
    • [08/27/2016] Fixed by returning dashboard code to original state.
  • Workouts, whats new, strava not on the right side of the screen on mobile device
    • [08/31/2016] Implemented code so all mobile device users are routed automatically to Mobile Friendly Dashboard
    • [08/27/2016] Created a Mobile Friendly Dashboard.

    • [08/26/2016] Initial review shows it's the journal widget on the dashboard @ 100 items and many photos. We have reduced it to 40 items and implemented code that resizes all images to 400px. There was one t-shirt image that was over 10MB! We will keep testing as we look to move forward with tech changes.

  • Coach, thanks for the info on the upgrade! I've not seen any new issues, which is good news. If I see any thing, I'll report it here. I was hoping that the upgrade might help to improve the site performance, but that does not seem to be the case. I'm not sure what others are experiencing, but it typically takes 15-30 seconds for the site to load. User experience data show that users tend to drop off after about a 3 second load time, so the site is taking 5 - 10x longer to load than recommended. The good news, for me at least, is that once the site has loaded, subsequent requests don't tend to take as long to load: typically 8-12 seconds. If you're interested, I can share some tools that you or your developer can use to track and improve these measures.

  • I have the same experience as Clark.
There is probably one task that is taking the majority of the load time.
Have the developer setup timers after each discreet part of the load process and then you can start improving the slowest process first.
Perhaps retrieving the dashboard data is what takes the most time?
If so, this could be cached on your server and "refreshed" every 5 minutes (or whatever time interval you like).
That way, if 30 people hit the site in between refreshes, they get the cached data and the database doesn't have to be queried. That makes this process go from a few seconds to under 1 second (or something like that)
  • Coach P,

Word wrap on the dashboard is not working.  Words are brok

en up at line carriages.  Other than that nothing  else that I've seen.

  • Not able to get to Forum Settings (trying to find where to change my signature).

This link says "the service is unavailable": http://members.endurancenation.us/ActivityFeed/ForumSettings/tabid/121/UserId/475/Default.aspx
  • All...I will keep an open tab in the top of this thread so we can see how things are going on your items...I have seen those load times (imagine if you WORKED on this site all day for eight hours...I estimate losing an hour a day of productivity to this issue). We are moving to Solid State servers (?) but I can ask re processes as well. Rest of issues catalogued above!!! Thanks!!!
  • A Solid State server means that instead of mechanical hard drives it will have solid state hard drives (like in a Macbook Pro) - no moving parts and much faster.
However, if there is an inefficient process or an unoptimized database query, upgrading to an SSD will not help in any noticeable way.
My 30 years of experience in software development is guessing that there is something going on in the load process of the dashboard that is highly inefficient. Throwing faster hardware at the problem won't make that big of an impact.
An idea...it could be the images that are loading in the dashboard feed. Try disabling images and see what that does to the load time. That's a very easy to try possible solution.
  • @Don, you got it...thanks!
  • Coach, share this link with your developer/tech support, it will give them a place to start on the load time problem.

  • I'm using Chrome as my browser and have noticed the pages kinda load "funny". For example, the "Forums, Training Plans, Community....etc" tabs at the top are skewed way off to the right.
  • Oh- and "Search" at the top of the page doesn't find any results.
  • Clark, we were using that today...thanks!!!
  • Updated info for friday on our work at the top...thanks.
  • I am having trouble viewing the site on my iphone.  Will not let me log in.  Anyone else?
  • I can't seem to log in on my iphone. The log in page just loads a search bar, a menu button and some pictures
  • Just wanted to say, I'm having no problems navigating or viewing on my iPad...image

Oh, thank god!  I thought I was going crazy.  I am having the same issue on my iPhone.  It is impossible to login.  No matter I what I do or how I try and back into it, I keep landing on a login page with no place to type any information.  There are no fields for username and password.  It just loops back to the same page.  I have not been able to gain access from my iPhone in a day, maybe two.

  •

    Ditto That.  Following.

  • All, in our quest to fix the journal / dashboard load times, it appears we turned off the login on the mobile site as of 5pm EST Friday...it was turned back on 9am EST Saturday. It should be all fixed now.

In addition, now have put a link to a Mobile Friendly Dashboard View that you can click on (or save) until we can get the site to automatically redirect the tablet / smartphone crowd!
  • The dashboard looks AWESOME on my IPhone coach! Great fix.
  • Hi - upgrade looks nice and once some of the more critical issues are fixed can we please look at printing the weekly plan? It used to fit on 1-2 pages (using right click print in browser), now it is 6 pages. Simplifying pages helps better now to reduce to 4 pages but still lots of wasted space. Thanks
  • Awesome! Thanks for the iPhone fix. One other issue... When using the mobile version, there are no links at the top to access the forums. So, I am clicking the link for the latest forum and then after that loads, I can access a "not read" link.

    Getting pretty spiffy!
  • "Remember login" doesn't work for me. Is there anything I can do in iPhone setting so I don't have to login every time I open the mobile version of training plan?
  • @Kevin, print screen is on the list. In the mean time, just zoom in / out of your browser and use the keyboard to take a screen grab and print that image..on a mac it's Shift+Command+4 and I drag what I want to save, then print that...can do Mon-Wed then Thu to Sun pretty easily!

@dino, confused. I click Menu, then Forums and I see them all on my iphone.

Yasko, I get that 1x every few days...it's a security feature that I don't know how to adjust on my end. Can you try a few more times and let me know next week?

  • Just want to add that when I instruct the software to mark all threads as READ, it takes even longer than it does to load up the site in the first place. And the EN website is definitely the slowest to load of any I routinely look at. So good job for the current improvements, but the to do list is long. image
  • While using the site on my iphone the "Team Announcements" and "Stay Up-To-Date..." sections don't seem to be updating. I've refreshed and/or relogged into the site several times and I am still seeing the "Keep Calm..." graphic and the newest content I can see under the updates is the Racing with HR, Power and Pace webinar from 8/25. Is this a site issue or a user error?

Also, during the last team update one of the announcements was that we will be able to move someone else's post if it has been placed in the wrong forum. I am not seeing the "Move" button to the the right of the "Alerts" button as instructed.

The post I wanted to move was in "The Pulse" forum and has been moved already.  It looks like posts in only some of the forums are moveable so this doesn't appear to be an issue.  The "Move" button does appear in the other forums.  Disregard my previous comment.

    Thank you.

  • Is it intentional to not have a "search" function in the forums or am I just to dumb to figure out how to do it?

See the Search field in the top right of the page. This is a more robust search that includes all of the posts in the forum as well as pages in the wiki, etc.

Yup...   Tried that. it generally just searched members or former members names...   but really generic searches sort of worked (for things in the "Wiki" or things like "Macro Forum", but those are generally easy to find without a search).

For instance, I know there is an "Official Bike Porn" thread...   But if you try to search for "Porn" or "Bike Porn", it certainly doesn't come up.  I figured "Porn" was something that would be pretty narrow and specific inside of EN.   Also, I can remember multiple threads over the years that discuss Lance Armstrong, but if you search for "Lance" or "Lance Armstrong" or "Doper", no threads come up.

    Thoughts?

  • Hey, how come I can't edit my "Forum Settings"? All I get it "the service is unavailable". I wanna change my sig line!

x2. I identified and posted that issue within the first day and it's still not fixed.
