Hey coach. Starting to think about 2017 season. Looking for guidance on what makes a good 2 IM season. This year I did IMTX cuz it was close and will do IMFL cuz my father in law will be going for his first there. But man is that a long season of training rides. Bigger picture I am working towards legacy (IMFL will be #6) so I like the idea of grabbing 2 next year but I think I would like them to be closer together.

The fan wants to go to los cabos at the end of october. If I assume that will happen, what would be another good full distance race to pair with it from a timing standpoint?

Maybe IMWI one of the August IM's, as those would provide more separation = a better chance of having a good performance at IMLC?

  • Wi could work. I was thinking later like Tennessee.
What would the period between the two races look like training wise?

Depends on the amount of time between races. Ideally enough to allow some flavor of IM Transition Plan + Get Faster Plan + EN*Full plan. But, again, it depends on how much of a gap we're talking about

  • ok. So if I were to try tennesee then IMLC I would have 4 or 5 weeks between. Figure a week of rest / swim only then a week of swim bike with running by the end of week 2? I mean what ever adaptations I made in prep for tennesee will still be there a month later right?
When people pick tw races together to try and kq with the second asa backup, are they close together like this? Ive got plenty of time to decide. And I might just experiment after IMFL and see how long it takes me to feel normal again. I have always just shut down completely for 10 days or 2 weeks after a full.

4-5wks between IM's is a very, very tight turn. You'd be extremely lucky to just maybe repeat your 1st race performance in that 2nd race. Usually people who are trying to KQ and have a second race as a backup pick events with more time between them...or they weren't able to run much in the first race = much reduced recovery cost = they can accommodate a shorter gap.

Recommend you post in the General Discussion forum as many athletes have direct experience with multiple IM seasons and can give you their feedback.

  • thanks r. I did that and the feedback was pretty consistant. Give yourself enough time to recover from the marathon.
I may just stick to one full next season. I think that I was trying to "hurry" to get to 12. And there really isn't any good to come from being in a hurry in this sport.

Nope...that's a pretty good strategy to live by too :-)

  • so, rumor has it that I will be going to the trek ToC camp next year (I know, you run one too but it is a gift and I ain't complaining)
My question is, where best in a season do you put a big bike week like this? If I do big bike work in May, when would be an ideal time to race afterwards? Should I be looking at an IM 8 weeks later to maximize the training effort?
    thx!

IM Boulder would be best option. In my experience, the Trek campers are about 90% recreational cyclists. Really not sure how much riding they do each day and at what pace, but they seem to provide a lot of food for their campers at the stops

  • yea I think that Im looking for a 70.3 as I plan to head out to los cabos late in 2017. But if mid june is the right time then I may head out to buffalo springs. it is drivable.
  • Generally, the closer to race day you do volume like this the more it will express itself on race day. This is why we really stress that you guys get the most out of ~wks14-18 of the IM training plans.
  • Gotcha. Then this ToC trip isn't the right kind of "camp" to slot in the wk14-18 push. For a few reasons I think.
    1) road bike.
    2) lots of climbing (for me anyway) but not a ton of volume. Looks like day's are 40mi or so and 4K feet of climbing per day on average for 5 days.
    3) no swim
    4) run on my own. Which I could do of course but this is a "bike week" and not he "tri week" that I would want in weeks 14 to 18.

That said, I'll be doing the ToC, cuz it's free but maybe as a "welcome back to training" placed earlier in a build.
  • ok. 2017 is off to a rocky start. I hurt my achilles during my first run test of the DOS and am just now starting to jog again. I have hit the bike sessions fine and done the core work.
The plan was for me to leave the OS about now and move in to prep for galveston 70.3.
But I really don't see me being in run shape by then. I should have 14 or so miles of total running done this week. All at IM pace. I'm not hurting anymore but I feel like a sherman tank. Same story in the water. I've had my first 2 swims since IMFL this week and they were far from pretty.
Is there time to pull this together or should I bail on galveseton, finish the OS bike, run easy and start swimming with an eye to buffalo springs in june?
  • If it were me I'd pull the plug on Galveston, if you don't think you'll have the run you want to have by then. If you decide to do this, update me on your race calendar via the TSR tool and I'll rework this for you
