Coach, still sick....

I'm not doing anything right now except working.  I still have a cough, I am still congested, I've been to my doctor.  Fever is gone (hallelujah!).  I have to go to a conference in Boston on Monday.  I can swim and run a little while there.  Will try a bike this weekend just to get my legs under me.   I'm sure I can do a OWS or pool swim without stress as well.  I am sure I can run but nothing till this weekend I think.

doing what my physician requests of me.... (so difficult)...  I appreciate your input:

Boston:  I'll be in Dedham:  any inside cycling there?

I feel better but still coughing:  it's been a month, two courses of Zithromax and inhalers...  I don't know about exercising at all.

Kona in about three weeks:  Just have fun?  darn it....  racing it would have been nice....  I've done Kona with the flu before... but I think IF of about 0.75 and just jog the run... if possible.  Not much training happening.

  • No need to train. Your body is in shock from workouts and travel. Don't cycle in Dedham...go to hot yoga: http://www.26and2.com/

I am okay with you swimming, but would prefer all aerobic stuff and short for the time being. Like 45 minutes max..just staying loose. Your fitness is there but you aren't in a position to force it to come back.

If you get the rest right, you might be surprised how you feel 10 days out from Hawaii. image
  • Thank you! I think part of this is bad allergy. Just being in Boston may help! No fever, I feel good but coughing. Did a hot 6 miles in austin before take off. Will jog to pool today. Busy at conference tomorrow but should be able to swim. I LUV hot yoga!!!!! Great find! I'll check it out.
  • I am finally getting better. I had air fluid levels in the sinuses on CT scan (way TMI) and am now on three antibiotics (yuck). and medicine for wheezing/coughing. but I finally do not sound like a tuberculosis/smoker/chronic bronchitic! I have never had anything like this before! (This is an occupational hazard of working in the ER...) I am not running fever and was able to do a gentle jog last week without difficulty for 6 miles. my time was good on that. Did a short spin on the bike on Monday with a 30 minute run. My watts are good but my heart rate is up there. I think I'm going to make it but I haven't done much since Mooloolaba. image Your thoughts on execution? I'm sure I can do 0.75 if on the bike.... my run will be whatever I can muster. No joint injuries or musculoskeletal issues at present
  • As you're noting, there is an upside to not being overtrained heading into Hawaii. The most important thing you can do is get used to the heat there so that your heart rate settles in general, but also to island temperatures. I strongly recommend a few mid-day runs. They don't even have to be that long but just gets you out sweating in the heat.

Your experience on the bike will largely be dictated by the conditions. I think your goal will be to keep your heart rate and check over the last 30 miles so that you can physiologically run off that bike effort. we just don't know how you feel when you get there, and my fear is that if you go a bit too hard in that section it will undermine the run.

Can't wait to see you on the big Island!
  • Thanks! Looking forward to seeing you all! ?????????
  • By the way I recalculated bike for .65 to.70
  • Great to see you today Patricia. Hope registration went well and that you are rested and ready!
