Marathon Nutrition

I am running the Columbus Marathon in 4 weeks.  Looking at the Columbus Marathon course map, they only have Clif Shot stations at mile 8 and approximately mile 17. My goal race time is 3 hours and the plan was to take a 100 calorie cliff shot every 30 minutes (30 min, 1 hour, 1:30, 2:00, 2:30). Based on this information, I would think I could carry 3 in my pocket to start the race and pick up 1 at each of the stations.

Or I could start with 1 in my pocket and eat at 30 min in. Pick 2 up at mile 8 and eat both before I hit mile 17. Then pick 2 more up at 17.

Or carry 5 from the start?

I just feel like these Clif shots are pretty heavy to carry and therefore would slow me down (not substantially but definitely some). Thoughts?

  • I like to have my brand and my flavors with caffiene and so I don't like to rely on the course for gels. If any flavor is fine then use the course. Most races I've been in only have 1 gel station around mile 18. 5 gels seems like a lot bet I guess I usually have at least 4. Whatever you have been training with. That is the reason I like doing long runs and races in tri shorts so I can stash gels in the side pockets.
