Planning a 70.3 Season

I'm looking at doing 70.3s next year and exploring a new region of short course since as of tomorrow, I'll be living in Calgary. There's a lot of talk on planning a multiple IM year season, but when 70.3s are the "A" race(s), what is ideal spacing? What works well with short course races along the way? Love any input!

  • Not veteran enough to offer much advise since this is new to me also, but had a call with Coach Rich last night to recap IM Wisconsin and look at next year. My plan is to do two 70.3 races next year and the races will be 9 weeks apart (early June - old Kansas 70.3 race and early August - Boulder 70.3. Still waiting on my final TSR and how that will all map out, but CR seemed to think that 9 weeks apart was realist from a timing perspective. Sure more advanced athletes could probably shorten that interval?

Interested to hear what others have to say on this topic. Might try and throw in a 3rd one along the way image
  • For me if they're not an "A" race I could do a second HIM in 2-3 weeks but if its an "A" then I would do 6-8 weeks. It depends how fast you recover.
  • 70.3 is a much more digestible, less painful, easier to recover from event compared to the IM. I would say it is very reasonable to consider doing back-to-back 70.3 races in 2-3 weeks, assuming you build a good OS base, have a solid HIM build, and barring injuries (within the context of having reasonable expectations for results - we cannot stay at 'peak' fitness for 1 month straight and expect to go low on that kind of timeline). Within the context of an IM build, the toll 70.3 Victoria cost me was minimal (literally, 3-4 days), and in fact, a significantly less painful event than the IM camp weekend I did one week later, which probably depends on the 70.3 race you pick - they are not equal. (pretty sure had I done 70.3 St George instead of Victoria I would say differently).

I am signed up for IM Wisconsin in 9/2017, which gives me a period of 4 months to play in the 70.3 sandbox, so your question is one I have been considering as well. I am either going to do 3 70.3 races between March and June OR an early season IM. If I go the 70.3 route, which I currently favor, I will likely attempt to improve each race. I think that should be possible given ~3-4 weeks recovery interval in between races. Re: short course racing, even though I appear to be a fast twitch kinda guy, I get very little out of sprints/olys, personally, unless I am doing it with friends/family/for the atmosphere. The HIM plans in EN provide much better work for the HIM distance than a sprint IMO. IMMOO will actually work out to be a family reunion - it cost me 0 SAUs. If I successfully negotiate for 2-3 race weekends with the wife, I am not going to spend it on a short course...
  • @"rlh2000", I'm planning a season of 3 * A 70.3 races for 2018. How did your 2017 70.3 season go?

I'm thinking 6/24 weekend (Buffalo Lake, TX, Coeur d'Alene, Costa Rica or maybe Nice France, but I would prefer to stay in the US), Steelhead 70.3 in 8/12/18, and then a fall race. For the fall, I'm leaning toward the third week in October, because of my work schedule. This would probably include options like Miami, New Orleans, Austin, North Carolina...

Any suggestions on those course options?
