Bill Eckert's Augusta 70.3 Race Report

Here are the details.  I really need some help with what I can do to fix how I feel when I eat during a race.  I think the UCAN during the race may have caused some problems so I will be looking at other options for during the race next time.  It has really been working good for me during training as it keeps my sugar intake lower and has really been helping me in working on my body comp.  During the race I got a lot of gas in my gut and just did not seem to process enough water.  I sweat a lot.  I am sure that as I continue to work on body comp, the sweat and heat accumulation problems on the run that I have will begin to lessen themselves.  Thank you in advance for any input and make sure you read the end.

Went to the bathroom several times before heading to swim start.  Felt like gut was pretty empty.

Pre-Swim – 8:00

1.67 scoops UCAN in 12 Oz. Water (133 Cal) (0.75 lbs) (283 mg Sodium)

Drank on the way to the swim.  Gut felt really good at swim start and during the entire swim.

2 Clif Bloks Margarita (180 cal) (300 mg Sodium)

1 Clif Shot – Mocha (100 Cal) (60mg Sodium)

Pickle Juice Shot (470 mg Sodium)

Sodium = 2530 mg

Water = 4.0 lbs

Calories = 300

TOTALS

Sodium = 8,324 mg (1,074 mg/hour)

Water = 19.5 lbs

Calories = 853 (110 cal/hour)

Finish Weight = 220.8 pounds (Start weight was 226.8 pounds)

Finish weight was taken after eating a piece of pizza and drinking 3 Ultras.  So total weight loss was probably about 27-28 pounds.

Swim was great.  Was a little worried about not being in a wet suit but I swim good, just not fast, and am very comfortable in the water.  The water temp of 77 felt really good and it was a nice morning swim.

I will say that it was hot on the bike and even hotter on the run.  I knew that given the predicted temperatures that I would be pretty much walking on the run given the accumulation of heat with my body weight.  With that I decided to push the bike just a little.  I drank as much as I could on the bike but never did pee until T1.  I did not really try because my gut felt bloated and was not sure if it was gas or not.  Went pee on the way out of T1 and it was all gas.  Could still feel a lot of gas in me though.  Also went pee at about mile 5.  Had a lot of gas then too and throughout the entire run.

My legs felt really good at the start of the run and had the temperature been lower I would have been able to run a lot more.  Did a walk/run strategy with a variation of that ratio as I went.  Gave up on that and just walked from mile 8.5.  I made it to the finish in only 17 minutes longer than last year.  Last year the high was 75 and the run was completely overcast.  There was also a change in the bike course that added about 900 feet of gain.  I did better on the bike course than last year so I feel good about that.  I am happy with my results given the weather conditions and the fact that I am still carrying a lot of extra weight.  I need to continue working on that and that is the plan.

Now for those of you who made it this far, it was a very special day for me.  After crossing the finish line I proposed to my girlfriend over by the stage area.  I had placed the ring in a cleaned out gel pack and put it in my bento box in transition.  I got it out in T2 and carried it with me on the run in the pouch on my bottle holder.  I surprised her and got her kids there so they could be with her.  She said yes and we are looking forward to our future together.  This will always be a memorable race for me!

  • Love this story Bill, congratulations!!! Didn't you feel nervous about losing the ring? Did you have enough energy to get on one knee when you proposed? Do you have a picture? That's so awesome!

    Oh, and great race too considering the conditions!
  • Grats Bill and wish you a happy wedding !! I would have been scrared to loose the ring hah
  • If you only knew how many different options I looked at to get that ring to the finish line.  I was not sure when I left home for the race if her kids were going to make it so I had to bring it with me.  That left me with the only option of carrying it with me.  I was very careful about how I packed it in the bento but I was still nervous during the bike about pulling something out of the box and accidentally catching it and pulling it out too.  I was a little nervous on the run but not as much.  I only had some Tylenol in the pouch with it so did not really need to get in there unless there was an emergency.  On a funny note, when I  stopped at the Port a Potty out of T2 I looked inside and did not want to set my bottle anywhere so I just dropped in on the ground and almost immediately went ohhh S__T.  I looked at it when I came out and the pouch was facing up but still was not sure how it had hit the ground.  I debated on getting the ring out to check it several times during the run but never did because I had to keep reminding myself that there was nothing I could do if it was broke.  I was a little worried about getting down on one knee but figured I would just deal with it if I cramped trying to get up.  It all worked out though.  I guess the adrenaline of the moment really helped.  I do have some pictures and one of her kids took a video.  Don't have that yet.  Here is a link to her facebook page where some of the pictures are:  https://www.facebook.com/tonya.garner.73?fref=ts I will see what others I can get.
  • Congratulations on your race and the proposal and the acceptance!  Yahoo!

    If you have practiced with UCAN, the only issue I can see is maybe your bike HR was too high to process the calories?  Also do you normally use that much nuun in practice?  Sometimes the food coloring and flavors can cause GI upset.  Maybe you would be better off with just some salt and lite salt in water, or salt pills?

  • @Satish.  Thank You!  I do usually use that much NUUN in training and it has never bothered me.  It adds flavor and sodium without calories so it has been good for me in my quest to lose weight.  HR was definitely higher than normal so that probably did have a lot to do with it.  I felt okay on the bike just bloated towards the end with gas.  I will definitely be experimenting with a lot of different things and paying close attention to how I feel and how that relates to my level of exertion.

  • @ Francis  Thank You!  I was definitely worried and tried not to think about it too much.
  • Right on! What a great day.

    Proposing! What a great use of your fitness. I hope you have MANY happy years together. Can't wait for the photos.

  • Congrats on making it to the finish with ring intact! Great story. How are you mixing nuun tabs with water during the bike ... are you stopping to drop a pill in the hand-off bottles?
  • Congratulations on your EPIC day and strong finish with the proposal bro!  You did a lot of things right by the way.....

    A few questions:

    1) What were the temperatures on the run......very difficult to process calories when temps rise, especially if a lot of calories where ingested during the bike leg....Moreover, during an HIM where intensities and HR is running higher relative to a IM, less is usually more in terms of caloric intake....

    2) What did you eat the night before for dinner and what time?

    3) Again, taking that much NUUN, which is not buffered, will cause my stomach to really revolt.  I have to use Salt Stick (which is buffered) when I am packing 1200 - 1500 mg/hr on a long course race to avoid any issues there.....

  • Dwwww - great report!  Worth a click through to the photos. Maybe you can grab one for this thread as they may fall way down on her feed?  And don't make us choose who is cuter!!!

  • Awesome! Congrats!
  • Congratulations on the race and on the after race! It looks to me that you probably overcooked the bike (which was intentional it sounded), but that with the heat, made the stomach revolt.

    I am a firm believer in body comp goals, but I work on that when I am not training/racing. I will fuel the bike and run as I need to (so I use Gatorade Endurance, or rather choke it down) and know that if I am training correctly and eating right outside of training, the rest will take care of itself. If I try to drastically cut calorie intake during training and then use that in races, I will run into a number of issues including fatigue, hangry, and possibly leading to injury if I try to "power through". That calorie number on the bike and run legs looks pretty light to me, esp with all that sodium. Adding more calories during the bike, when your stomach can still handle it (esp on a hot day) could lead to a better outcome during the run.

    Just my two cents. Congratulations again.
  • Congratulations Bill! Love the report!
  • protein powders are known to create gas, add the nuun tablets and the stress of a HIM race + the heat, might be the reason to your discomfort. Peter Noyes' podcast on the Angeles Crest 100 made me realize that I need to train out of my comfort zone ("eat a burrito and go for a run at noon" I believe he said). So I now run in the middle of the day or will run with a full stomach, just to get used to the discomfort and pace accordingly... Congrats on the wedding
  • Bill Congratulations!

    FYI..  I used to do UCAN and I really do believe in it (just trying new things).  You may want to go to their website and watch the videos.  I do not believe it works if you take anything sugary (applesauce / banana) prior to using it.  I know Rob Gray (Ultraman Champion) takes it first and does not hit the sugar until he is well into the workout / race.

    Congrats again!

  • Thanks everyone for the congratulations and the feedback on the race.  I am going to add some pics right now but will respond to the feedback on the race in a little while.

    This she captioned "I was so surprised"

  • Congrats Bill! First on the engagement & second on surviving & finishing the race. I'm sorry to have not connected with you in Augusta. It was a hot & painful day...I'm guessing the proposal was your "one thing" that kept you going?
  • To cool for words!!!  Congratulations on both the finish and the engagement!

  • That.is.awesome!! Congrats on a great day (in many ways)!! Mark
  • Bill,
    Best.race.report.ever!
    Congratulations on both a terrific race and your very creative proposal to your beloved. Wishing you and Tonya abundant love and happiness.

    Beth
  • First off, congratulations! I'm sure this is a day you will both remember.

    I used UCAN for a season when I did a couple of HIM SO and I experienced some gut issues during the run as well. Mostly though I just didn't have any reserves when I got a couple of miles into the run so I had to switch to gels  (without the ring ). I always did fine with UCAN during training but in racing it just didn't work for me.

    The next year I started eating real food mostly recipes from the  Feed Zone cookbook and drinking Skratch Labs. Since then I've continued to change my calorie source but the Skratch drink has remained constant. The main thing I've noticed is that the higher the intensity the less leeway I have with nutrition, so going harder on the bike plus the heat could have played a big role in your discomfort.

  • @ Jacklyn  Thank You!  I can think of no better way than something like this!

    @Paul H.  Thank you!  I broke the NUUN tablets in half and had them in a plastic bag.  I have a 40 oz. Speedfil on my downtube and I shove the halves in there and add water.  I was preloaded coming out of transition.  Speedfil was filled with water and 3 tablets.  Also had 2 full bike bottles with 2 tablets each in them.  I had drank almost all of that by the first aid station at about 20 miles.  Grabbed two waters at the first aid station and finished what I already had with me.  After that I added two tablets to the Speedfil along with one bottle of water.  Drank that and another plain bottle of water before the second aid station.  Grabbed one bottle at the second aid station and just drank it.  It was crowded and that’s all I could get without stopping.  Grabbed two more bottles of water at the third aid station and just drank those plain.

    @Shaughn Thank You!

    1.  Temp on the bike started at 80 and steadily rose to 90.  Started run at 1:20 at 90.  It was 91 at 2:00 and then hovered around 90 for the rest of the run.  The dew point during the bike was about 67 and during the run was about 63.  I heard the real feel from Accuweather was over 100.

    2.  We ate at Road House at 4:30.  Ate the same thing last year at about 7.  Grilled chicken breast with onions and mushrooms and pepper jack, plain sweet potato, and plain baked potato.  No veggies or salad.

    3.  I did not realize about the buffered part of the equation.  I have used Salt Stick in the past.  I may look at dialing back the tablets so that I can add sodium as needed and still keep the calories separate.  Even though I have not had trouble in training my HR was not as high.

    @Jenn  Thank You!  You know there is no contest, she is definitely cuter!!!

    @Kyle ThankYou!

    @Scott Thank You! The push on the bike was intentional.  I think my watts were just a little high but my HR was higher.  I did just run with it given that I knew what was going to happen on the run.  I have really been watching calories closely because I really want/need to drop weight.  I was at 280 back in late 2010.  Started triathlon and got down to 245 in early 2011 and have been hovering around that since then.  I know from past experience that sugar is a big problem for me so I made a choice a few months ago to get off of the sugar as much as possible.  I can now go for a pretty long time without much added carbs.  I am at 227 now and plan on getting under 200.  I hear what you are saying about the calories.  All I know is that I was not hungry during the race and did not feel that oh crap I need sugar feeling.  I may have taken in too much sodium but not sure given how much fluid I sweated out.

    @ Don  Thank You!  Congratulations to you on IMCHOO!!  It was a brutal day there as well.

    @David  Thank You!  I was not aware of the protein powder creating gas.  Never had that problem in the past.  As I look back, my discomfort on the bike only really began after I hit the dose of UCAN at about 1:20 on the bike.

    @ Brian  Thank You!  I knew there was something with UCAN like that but just could not find any info.  The applesauce/banana was so early I figured I was okay.  I was trying not to mix any sugars with the UCAN but just could not figure out how.  I will definitely need to look at the videos and find more information before I use it in a race again.

    @ Scott  Thank You!  It’s all good.I had everyone’s race numbers and looked for everyone in transition on race morning.  Ran into Chris Oubre and Dave Nesom.  Chris was in the same row as you. And yes, that was definitely my one thing!!!  She said of all the times she has seen me that when she saw me at about 8 miles that she thought I was going to drop out of this one…..little did she know…

    @ Jennifer  Thank You!

    @ Mark H. Thank You!

    @ Elizabeth  Thank You!

    @ Mark M.  Thank You!  I am thinking that the UCAN may be a better training tool for me as well.  It has seemed to help with the weight loss and I have plenty of reserves right now.  Maybe not so much as I lose weight.  I really do believe that the heat played a major role in my situation.  I really do not like a full stomach when training, especially on the run.  In my past races, I truly do feel like I have over fueled.  I was trying to avoid that on this one and thought the UCAN might be a solution.  I do feel like I did not over fuel but the heat really added a twist to things.  I was expecting it but not to the extent that it happened.  I may experiment during longer training with just using the UCAN before I start and then switching to a sugar source later on as I needed.  Cooler temps are coming so I will bet that I do not have as many issues.

  • Great report Bill & congratulations.

    I have had the same experience with UCAN. Bottom line is that it gives me gas . For me it seems to work best when I have a scoop of UCAN 45 minutes before a workout & then switch to the normal gel & GE combination. For longer workouts I stay away from the UCAN altogether.

    Mark

  • Bill, It was good to meet you in transition on race morning and wish we'd have been able to catch-up later as well. Great that you saw some improvement on the bike--it was a seriously hot day out there.

    Absolutely love the proposal story too--Congratulations to you both! Hope to see you again next time around in Augusta.

  • @Dave. Thank you! I read your race report and man what a day. Again, glad you are doing okay.
  • Amazing!! What's an amazing day. Congratulations times 10!

    I really liked how you wrote all our numbers down and came to visit us in transition.
  • AWE….LOVE! Congratulations! Cant think of a better place to propose than at race image
  • @Mark S. Thank you and thanks for the input on UCAN! I have also had good luck in using the UCAN about 30 to 45 minutes before a workout. I have also used another dose at about 2 hours on my long rides and at an hour on my long runs and did not have a problem. I did have a problem when I used it during the bike of an Olympic distance race but that was an n=1 experience and I had so many other issues with that race. I was way undertrained due to some injuries and my HR was really high. I attributed it mostly to the undertraining. In looking back now, I think the luck/good experience I have had using it during training was due to a lower HR and just not enough time for the problem to really present itself. My training was good coming into Augusta but my HR was slightly elevated on the bike due to the heat. When that happened I don't think my body could work out the digestion and cooling equation when I added the dose on the bike and it had plenty of time to let me know that. I think if I use it on a race again, I will just use it about 30 minutes before the swim and then just use some gels or powerbar for calories. I don't like using the GE because I have to drink soooo much fluid that it just adds way too many calories.
  • @Chris. Thank you! It was a fun day! You really made my day when I saw you at the start of the second loop. Thanks for the encouragement.

    I did the whole numbers and looking for everyone in transition because I have felt like it is much harder to try to connect with everyone on these 70.3 events because they are a much shorter lived experience before the race. In the last two I have done I have barely run into anyone. Like in Chattanooga earlier this year I just happened to run into Tony Puckett while waiting in line for a port a potty before the swim. There was an attempt to do a dinner last year on Saturday night before Augusta but man that is a horrible time to try to connect and no one showed up. I felt like if i made a proactive effort to try to connect it might help and it did. Anyways, just wanted to put a person with the names I see in the forums all the time and I was able to do that much better this time. It just seems like there is so much connection with everyone during the IM events and it seems like a lot of good energy gets created by that. I think we achieved that this time.
  • @Danielle Thank you! Spoken like a dedicated triathlete...lol. It was a great time for us. This was my first HIM last year and she was a great support for me. She also made it through Chattanooga 70.3 and several smaller races before and since those. She knows how much this means to me so it was kind of special to do it at the end of the race. Again, thank you!
