Race option prior to Kona 2017

Hello Coach

As we discussed, I am stuck with my registration for IMWI and IM Kona. Ironman is refusing to credit me for IMWI so I have to pick another race. I would much prefer not to add another IM and just focus on Kona but I am stubborn at not wasting a $950 race registration. Also, I don't really want to travel somewhere to just do the swim and bike; I want to do the whole thing! I am looking at the other race possibility (to transfer IMWI), want to limit cost and limit the amount of crazy weeks of high TSS associated with doing 2 IM races in the summer. I see 2 main options:

1) IM Colorado. Early enough to limit impact on IM Kona. Same car ride distance as IMMT. Could be higher cost thn IMMT (I will stay at my brother's place while in IMMT). The swim is in a reservoir and my wife can do it also. Would the high altitude training help me?

2) IMMT. Later in the summer but still 8 weeks apart from Kona. Could limit the high TSS week versus option 1). Large group of EN going. Cheaper????

What is your expert opinion. Do you see another option? Please don't suggest a race on another continent!!! I need help deciding and want to decided quickly before registration fills up.

Thanks!

Sorry didnt see it was for Rich LoL damn beer
  • Don't we all wish we had your problem!! My 2 cents is that it depends on what you are looking for at Kona. A pro would not be wasting effort at IMMT unless they were on the 2nd tier of KPR. They would much rather make the first cut of entries so they could put in a solid block of training for Kona without losing time to the taper/recovery that IMMT would require. On the other hand, if you aren't trying to set the world on fire at Kona and not seeking a podium finish, then IMMT allows you to go with one large build, race, take maybe 2 weeks recover, then a shorter build, and recover again. The latter might be mentally easier to wrap your head around. And from the Hough perspective, it also depends on whether the family would rather take a trip to Colorado or to Mt Tremblant. Again, this is a problem many of us wish we had. Good luck on your decision!
  • Hey Frederick,

I hit you back on Intercom so I think we're square. Good luck!
  • Thank you all. I totally realize that my problem is not a bad problem. It just puts a bigger financial and time burden, traveling to Kona with 4 kids and adding another race to the training calendar. I was looking for some assistance to help me decide to move or cancel. I appreciate the assistance from everyone. I decided to transfer the race to Boulder (June 11th). It will certainly help maintain a good fitness and as the coach recommend, there's enough separation from the A race. Thanks again. I wish the same problem to everyone else at EN.
