Random thoughts after riding with Coach Dick this weekend

1.  Rich is a very strong cyclist... and I am weak.  Sorry I held you back, Rich.

2.  The "strong" riders at RMCC got nothing on Rich.

3.  Wind sucks.

4.  Somebody needs to teach the RMCC group about group riding etiquette.

5.  Even in Boulder the rednecks are plentiful.  Several honks and "F**k yous" heading up Coal Creek Canyon on Sat.

6.  If the EN thing doesn't work out, Rich has a future selling minivans... he almost had me sold after Saturday's ride.

Great to see you again, Rich.  I'm going to lobby hard to come out to the TOC camp next year... or if you try the Colorado camp again, maybe I'll try to do that one.

  • Oooooh, Colorodo Camp????? Hmmmmmmm. I really need to quit this day job so I can just travel around the US to ride with all the EN Peeps!
  • I am right behind you Nemo. Maybe we can become EN Groupies!

  • Hey Steve,

Thanks for the ride! It's shame the guys that we ended up riding with turned out to be dumbasses because it would have been more fun to ride with other people. For the Team, the short story of Saturday's ride was:

    • A 7:45am ride didn't actually leave the parking lot until about 8:15...I needed to be at the airport by about 11:30-12p to pick up Joanne so a 30' late start really sucked. Steve and I were both really pissed and, when the ride started, we rolled right out of parking lot at our own pace vs theirs.
    • About 30' into the ride we missed a turn and back tracked, falling in with 4-5 riders from the group.
    • I went to the front and did my thing into the wind for a long, long time. I looked back and saw that I was by myself, having gapped Steve but Steve had the other 4-5 guys sitting on his wheel, not helping and letting him hang himself out in the wind.
    • 30" later I look back and the leader of the group, the guy who delivered the pre-ride brief in the parking lot, has come around Steve, gone right by him and is working to get back on my wheel.
    • At a light I don't get any props, thanks for the 30' pull into the wind...nothing. I decide these guys suck and the ride is now back to me and Steve riding around/near these clowns.
    • BTW, Steve, woulda been poor form for me to just drop you for the day after you made such an effort to ride with me in Boulder. No problem for me to do all the work, help you out, etc, but woulda been a dick move for me to just do my own thing.
    • Steve and I hang back for a bit after the light, I talk to him and say that basically I think these guys are dicks and I'm on a mission to get in a my own workout now, especially since we are about to climb up a canyon. I dial it up and roll by everyone, sitting on about 90%.
    • I look back and see Mr. Dickhead ride leader trying to bridge up to me. I dial it up just a tad to extend his work then, right when he gets up to me, I sit up and shut it down.. Body language says "Sorry, dude, I've already worked for you. Free ride is over. Do your own work." He "works" for about 30", then pulls out to have me take a turn...I just follow him into the center of the road . He still hasn't said anything to me, like we're in a friggin' road race or something, so I just drop the hammer, put up 400w for a minute or so, then ride at FTP and drop him like a bad habit.

Yeah, suprised that such a big, seemlingly well organized club had such a poor ride brief, started so late (30' is off the charts bad, unacceptable) and poor group ettiquette.

  • I'm getting a good chuckle about how crushed that guy must have been when he finally bridged up to you and then you shut it down. Ha! He sounds like a jerk who deserved everything he got.
  • Lookin out my window here in Kona. Dreading my training ride in what looks like sustained 10-20 mph cross winds with gusts. Needed a good laugh.

@ Rich - That is some of the funniest $hit I've ever read! Flipped the switch to Coach Dick and opened up a can on his a$$!
  • Rich,
That was funny but I feel that other guys pain when guys like you just "open the can" and ride away like that. NOT that I've been in Mr. Dickhead's shoes and let you do all the work, take a short pull then expect you to pull again BUT....

  • "I just follow him into the center of the road"

Nobody can out dick Coach Dick.
    Lmao.
  • That's ok, Rich was 'that guy' on Day 5 at ToC.  Dan, Brian, and I were trading blows trying to anihilate each other while Rich sucked and sucked, and sucked wheel.  Then we all said, ok, first town line or stop ahead sign is the end and we race to that.

A minute later, on inside information provided to him by Joe who parked the vans and rode backwards to meet us, Rich surged ahead and made his own finish line at the vans.  There was a heated discussion and protest to follow, but Rich's response,

"That's bike racing.'   We thought otherwise.   All in good fun.
