The Purpose of the NovOS Forum

The rest of this forum will be filled with weekly mojo and accountability threads. For example, the NovOS Week 1 Thread, or the NovOS Week 1 Bike Thread, NovOS Week 1 Core Workout Thread, where you'll encourage each other, hold each other accountable, and generally support each other as you build your FAST across your 14 weeks together.

NovOS Captains Wanted
We are looking for three members to serve as NovOS Captains to create and guide these weekly threads: Bike Captain, Run Captain, Core Captain. Bang the drum, basically. You will be rewarded with gold, riches, and accolades beyond your wildest dream, plus a free month of EN, and a badass OS Shirt.
Please email me (Brenda) at brenda@endurancenation.us if you're interested.

Please Introduce Yourself to Your NovOS Teammates!
Please join/sign into the NovOS by introducing yourself by posting to this thread, posting a picture and brief bio using the format below. These are the people you'll be training with, virtually, for months and months so it would be great to put faces and personal stories to names and email addresses!
We recommend that you subscribe to this thread, using the Additional Options dealio visible when you reply to this thread when making your introduction. You'll then receive an email when updates are made to this admin thread.

Finally, understand that the Coaches do not actively monitor these Training Group Forums, searching for training questions and support issues to address. That is, if you have a training related coachy-coachy question, you'll find us in the other forums and specifically in the Micro and Macro Threads!

Thanks! We look forward to seeing what fun and motivation you guys create for yourselves!

  • Hi friends, I'm Rachel. I've started many an out-seasons, but my consistency has left much to be desired! But I just moved from Chicago to Calgary, have a new job, and besides the struggles of settling in, my life is much simpler now, so way more time to train! The downside is that in the whole rush of finishing my PhD and moving to a new country, I have barely worked out at all since early summer, so I'm not starting in a good place. Only where to go is up! I'll definitely need the motivation and accountability of the team since I'm out of the workout habit.

I've been with EN for about 4 years now (wow!) and done 3 IMs (2x WI, 1x CDA). Looking at a 70.3 season for this year with CdA 70.3 and Calgary 70.3, then transitioning over to see if I can get my butt in gear to BQ in a fall marathon. I do stroke rehab research as my day job, and am looking forward to learning new hobbies this year as well as triathlon- mountain biking, skiing, all those fun Canadian things!

Bring on the pain and gain!
  • Okay guys, I have a run and bike thread leader. All I need is a core leader and we are set to roll. I will let you know who they are very soon. As for you Rachel H, you are going to have to learn how to freeze. Canada is cold my fellow Canuck, so one word - electric blankey

  • Aloha Teammates!

Mariah, EN's Marketing Director here - I have officially signed up for IMPuertoRico70.3 in March so that means NOV OS for me!

    OS Goals:
    1. Complete the durn thing injury free
    2. First season racing with power - learn that and see gains
    3. Lose 1.2lbs a week for goal weight for IMPR
    4. Recruit 2 people to the EN OS to suffer with me
    5. Motivate the team in weekly threads that the captains post

I typically spend my OS in tropical weather to escape the winter cold which means no biking and sporadic running - this year I've decided to forgo both of those trips so I can focus on training and actually being home to be consistent. Being that my swim is terrible and my race is in 4 months - I will be swimming in the OS - which means early mornings for me which I am NOT a fan of - but I want to see what Im capable of as a healthy focused athlete. I injured myself over a year ago and ready to come back. Im hungry for a well executed training block - My Paincave is ready - Lets do this!

P.S. I live in Charlotte, NC if anyone is around and wants to train together!
  • Go get em Mariah!  Can't wait to watch your progress and cheer you on!

  • Hello everyone!  This is Brian Hagan, your NovOS bike captain here.

This will be my second full season with Endurance Nation.  I am so glad a joined last year in time to start with the NovOS.  I love the run durability theme and the fact that most of the workouts are less than an hour.  One of the things I loved the most, was not only sharing my wko challenges and experiences with the other participating athletes, but also learning from many of the experienced athletes. I also lost weight (while getting stronger and faster) last winter for the first time since... well I guess high school.

My main goal is to get stronger.  I know the run durability plan and the bike workouts will make me faster, but I also know that getting stronger is what I need to do to get even faster.  I am very wimpy when it comes to planks, push-ups and paddles, so my plan is to get the most out of all the core workouts and add in some legs and glute muscle strengthening drills.

My A race in 2017 is Ironman Mont-Tremblant, but I am not going to even think about that (maybe a little) until the spring.  My secondary goals are to lose a little bit of weight and gain a little bit of FTP to increase my Watt/KG FTP to be in the 3.8 to 4.0 range.  I'd like to do a sub 21 minute 5K, but also get better at my running form.  I recently had it critiqued, and I've got a quite a few issues to work on.  I also plan on continuing to work on my swim form.  I've been going to swim stroke analysis sessions, and I want to keep practicing what I have learned in the sessions.

Looking forward to getting started a week from Monday!

  • Hey, everyone! I'm in my third OS. I moved from Tucson to Maryland near DC this summer and left Paradise to live some other kind of dream. I now work 15-17 hours a day, plus 3-6 on the weekends and average about 4-5 hours of sleep during the week and then catch up on the weekend. I haven't swam since my last Tri last Nov and the nearest pool is 25 min away. A-race is Rev Quassy and who knows how it will go- my only swim training may be cords! Well, I did do two ocean swims while out of the country for work and 30 min was easy on no training- so I'll be fine with cords, right? Right??!

My main goals this year are don't slow down and lose 7 pounds. I've gotten fat since the move and I feel like crap and look terrible too. I have 60-80 min in the morning for training. Not sure how many tri's I'll be doing, but I have a lot of half marathons and a few centuries planned.

Looking forward to some accountability after being away!
  • Well, let's give this a try. Just kidding. This will be my second OS. Looking forward to it. I live in Upstate NY and have been a member of EN since 2014. If you want someone to ride the Lake Placid course with let me know I can definetly-- introduce you to someone that would be more than willing to go with you. Ha. Seriously let me know and I would be more than happy tag along. I have been up there many times.
Completed IMLP '14 & '16. Going to stick to the 1/2 courses for a little bit. Family and sports are kicking in and can't spend that much time immersed in the "pleasure" of the pain. Ha.

That being said I want to get my speed back to where I was before I started to focus on Triathlon, specifically long course. My goals will be to increas speed, lose 10lbs (post IM weight gain). Oh and HAVE FUN!

I am not a frequent forum visiter so please forgive me if you don't get an answer back or here much from me in here. I have promised some that I would make more of an effort.

Anyway, I am looking forward to it and to the team accountability. If there is anything I can help with let me know. Now stop reading this and go work on your FTP!
  • This will be my 4th Outseason with Team EN and it seems to get better every year. I've competed in 3 70.3 IM events and a 100 mile triathlon this summer in Kansas. For 2017 I'm working towards competing in IMTX. This will be my first full IM but I'm ready to tackle the longer course. Just plan to work on weaknesses and my nutrition plus getting on a fitted tri bike for this race. Really looking forward to crossing that finish line and hearing those words......YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!!
  • Hey Everyone! Stephanie Weldon here, your Nov OS Core Leader ! This will be my second OS and im super excited! Mother of 6 , married, part time musician/group x instructor from Brandon, MS. I actually have one more race but will be following the core work and easing into the full November OS plan with you guys mid-month.

It's been quite the epic year but I have some specific goals for the OS:

    1. Drop 10 lbs to get super slick slim & fit.
    2. Increase bike speed by switching over to power assessment. Truly a bike-focused year!!
    3. Stay healthy & injury-free!

2017 I'm in for a March bike camp, Quassy & IMLP (#15). I Legacy qualified last month in Choo and will be applying in November for Kona. By March I will know if I've been selected. So in the meantime just wrapping up an epic 2016 season w/IMFLA in a few weeks and prepping for OS.

As for our core training I'm really excited! I'm a certified LesMills cxworx core instructor and I saw huge improvement in overall stability and fitness with last year's OS core program! I'm your gal to fuss at or gripe to when you want to complain about push-ups, planks and hovers!! I love this part of the OS. Short, sweet, burn it up workouts. Haha!! ??????????we'll have a lot of fun and get ripped stable cores in the process!!

Anyway....hello again everyone! Oh ...I am from the south so "ya'll " have a great weekend!! ??

    Steph ??
  • Hi everyone! I'm looking forward to getting back to regular training. This year I did CdA 703, and the swim & bike of IM CdA. An asthma attack kept me from starting the run. One thing I learned is how quickly one recovers from a swim-bike event! The next day the only thing that was sore were my lungs (there was a fire in the area & I had breathing issues off & on until we left the area).

Since CdA, I have been trying to get in a regular schedule of exercise, but family trips (including a recent trip to Kona to watch my husband - Mark Maurer compete!) and work have been getting in the way. Next week I will be in Dublin attending a conference, and my only planned workouts will be walking around the city. So, I am entering the OS with plummeting fitness. Time to reverse that trend.

My plans for 2017: Puerto Rico 70.3 (thanks Mariah for the inspiration!) and CdA 70.3. Mid July I will be the support person for Mark's Alaskaman adventure. One of my duties will be running the last 6 miles up Mt. Aleyeska with him. So this year, I will also be doing a lot of trail running & climbing. I may do a September half ironman if I find one that fits our schedule. I have done ironman distance races (or trained for them) for the past 3 years & don't currently feel the need to do one this year.

  • See you at CdA 70.3 Susan!
  •  we can commiserate about getting a PhD. I got mine in 2013.
  • Hi y'all (tip of the fedora to Stephanie) . Pretty much everything about me makes people wonder what I'm doing here. I'm old 64 the 30th. I'm fat 258 this morning. But I love triathlon, I work hard and I've lost 100 lbs. This year I did 2 70.3s 2 sprints and an Oly. I also did 2 half marathons and a century. Obviously my biggest limiter is body comp so more big weight loss is my number 1 priority. Cant help my age so I choose to ignore it. I'm volunteering at IMFL in a couple of weeks so I can register for 2017. With luck I should qualify fo Medicare and become an Ironman in the same weekend next year. The more I become involved with EN the more I like it. Counting on you guys to drag me through the OS without needing a walker??
  • @ David, I think that's the best introduction I've read in the 3+ years I've been with EN. I'm looking forward to following you through the NOS.
  • Hi everyone! I'm a returning member from Gladstone, NJ. I started with EN during the first outseason, worked my way through 5 IM's and got burnt out by the end 2011. I spent a full year just running, and then the last 3+ years in crossfit. After a bunch of injuries and a schedule shift (and getting humiliated biking with old tri friends) I'm dipping my toe back into the triathlon waters with one 70.3 (Lake Placid) on the schedule for next year. I've spent the last several weeks getting ready for the outseason and I'm so glad to be back!

  • Hello NovOS mates! I have been hovering in and around EN since 2010 but my involvement has been limited during that time; including a recent 1 1/2 year break while I lived in Kailua-Kona, HI! I have completed 2 IMs (Wisconsin 2007 and Florida 2008) and around 10 70.3s. Interestingly, I didn't compete in triathlon while living in Kona as I got swept away with 6-man outrigger paddling. The sport is as mentally and physically challenging as anything I have tried. As a lifelong team sport athlete, I appreciated being a boat with 6 people for 4+ hours working towards a common goal. That same team concept is alive and well in the EN haus and keeps me coming back for more!

This is my first OS with EN and I am looking to cheer on and be accountable to the group. I moved from Kona to Salt Lake City a few months ago so elevation and cold weather will be top on my list of challenges. I am sticking to 70.3s for the upcoming year and plan on St. George and CDA. My running has always been my worst discipline with way too much walking during training and racing. My hope is that I can execute a race that allows me to run as well as have the fitness to do so!

Off to get my pain cave warmed up!
  • Bonjour, tout le monde (sorry, IMMT is on my mind...). This will be my 4th OS with EN (third serious one). I'll be doing weeks 1-12 and dropping out a little early to start prep for IM 70.3 Florida (per my TSR). Also racing IMMT with the team and maybe IMCoz in November. Goals for this OS include improving body comp; I've gained about 5 lbs since IMWI, and I'd like to lose that and at least 5 more during the OS. We'll see how testing goes, but I'm not close to where I finished the OS last year, but I trust the process to get me back where I need to be; I'll have more on numeric FTP and V-dot goals once testing happens. For those doing this the first time, I'll just say to trust that you will improve dramatically through the OS and it will be much tougher than it appears on paper; take the recovery days seriously!

Let's get this started next week!
  • Good afternoon! Although I have listen to EN podcasts since around 2013, I just joined the team a week and half ago. Looking forward (?) to my first OS with EN! Appreciate all the insights and info that you all have shared. My main goals are to lose about 10 lbs and get ready for my main race in 2017 (Ironman 70.3 Hawaii)
  • What is up everyone?!

Looking forward to my 2nd OS, with my A race happening in July at IMLP. These are my 3 goals for this season:
    (1) Get down to 150 again, but this time carry it through to race day;
    (2) Peak in fitness race week, not 2 months prior like this year;
    (3) Race injury free.

The rest should take care of itself if 1-3 happen!
  • Hi Everyone! This will be my 4th OS start with EN. I successfully completed IMMT'14 and that's been it for me. The past 2 years I started each OS strong but fizzled due to ongoing injuries which led to weight gain and loss of what fitness I had. I am excited to begin anew with my goal of IMLP'17! Right now I'm working with SwimBikeFuel on body comp and nutrition which is really helping me recharge my training batteries. Other than IMLP, I have no other races on the calendar at this time. I plan on doing the EN IMLP training camp in June and I'm happy that the dates work out for me.

On the personal side, I live in NH so my pain cave is going to become my best friend again. My firstborn son went off to college in Montana in August which makes me really proud but I miss him terribly so I'm really looking forward to the holidays when he comes home. My DH and I recently celebrated our 25th anniversary, he continues to be such a tremendous support of my tri craziness, and I feel truly blessed.
  • Happy Sunday! I'm Ed Baas - Ann Arbor, MI - ok, just west of AA, new member to EN. Former marathon runner, turned triathlete after too many stress fractures. I've done Wisconsin, IMMT, and Whistler. Took this year off from competing after a few knee repairs in January. I've signed up for the BRC camp and my first event so far for next year is Hawai'i 70.3 in June after a 9 day camp on the island. Thought I'd start somewhere nice!! Considering a fall full IM but I'm playing a bit of "wait and see how the knee responds to getting back to full training". Looking forward to the OS!! @Patrick - just noticed you are doing Hawai'i as well!
  • Hello to everyone! I'm Robin from Indianapolis.

This will be my 5th OS! Going to get back on the IM hamster wheel this year at IMWI (last did IMCHOO in 2014). My goals for the OS are to really crank my FTP and run up to new levels. To keep me accountable I'm going to shoot to break into the 1:25:XX range for a half marathon in early 2017. Another OS goal for me is to stay plugged in here with the team and feed off all the MOJO available in here.

    Race Schedule as of now:

    Indianapolis 500Festival Mini-Marathon - May

    Wisconsin 70.3 - June

    IMWI - Sept

  • Hey Hey Cool Kids!

I'm SUPER pumped to be joining y'all for a legit (barely hacked) OS for the first time in a while. Been racing like cray cray and the ole FTP has taken a hit.  I just completed IM #10 at the World Championships in Kona which has a nice tidy ring to it.  Though it would be easy enough to do a total "mic drop" and walk away on top, I do love this lifestyle and ain't exactly selling my tri bike anytime soon.

Anyway, I've given myself a couple of months of reflection to set goals and figure out what 2017 will look. In the interim I'm stoked to be back in the saddle getting stronger and faster with the BEST team on the planet.

Oh and the ladies that lead the charge in this post are some amazing Chicas. The guys are all right too!  And those I haven't met / gotten to know I'm sure we will be AWESOME together!  We can't NOT have fun. Just sayin'...

    Cheers!

  • Ed, Look forward to meeting you in June on the Big island!  All the best, Pat

  • Hello everyone!

I am looking forward to the OS this year, I am really ready to get started.

This is my 5th? (maybe, I am not sure) OS, but last year I took the winter off to focus on my new job. Now that I am comfortable in the job, I am ready to get back into the swing of things.

I raced my fourth IM in Boulder this last August (2016), and I am signed up for IM Copenhagen in August 2017, and a local (almost) half in May. My plan is to just keep as consistent as possible over the out-season to get ready for a lot of work in the spring.

    Christy
  • The real question we should all be answering/asking is WHAT ARE WE ALL WATCHING ON NETFLIX this OS?! haha
  • David, great intro!
This is my third OS. My first riding with a power meter. My main goal is to stop staring at the numbers on the thing and learn how to work the power meter. Second is to improve my vdot. After that, it is to be consistent with the core work and other lifting I am doing. Planning a half marathon in December and a full in April to see if I can still run that far in hopes of doing a full I'm in 2018. Last season, did the ITU Long Distance worlds, which is my longest race to date. That was a fun, long day. Next year will be a bit less volume with two HIM's in spring and fall to make room for a 30th anniversary trip with my lovely wife in the summer. Looking forward to OS work!
  • Hey everybody,  I'm back after taking most of this year off.  I'm going into my fourth year with EN.   I haven't raced since IMMT 2014.  That was a great experience but it just did me in!  Kristen, my friend, glad to see you back. Sounds like we've had a similar 2 years off.  I got married this past summer and planning the wedding took much of my time.  My husband is a long distance road cyclist so I'm in pretty good shape bike-wise but my running and swimming is pretty much non-existent these days.  My goals for next year are still a little fuzzy.  I guess the main one is just to build consistency.  I will concentrate on the 70.3 distance in '17.  I am already signed up for the Quassy Half and plan to do either Timberman, Poconos, or Toughman New York.  I'll throw in a sprint or Oly or two in there.   I honestly do not feel ready to begin the OS next week but coach Rich told me to so...I will do as I'm told.  I look forward to training with you all.
  • Hi everyone -

This is my first OS and I am looking forward to structure.  I've been winging it the last two years!  Thinking I can make some good gains with this plan, in prep for HIM Oceanside in April.

    My OS goals:

    1) Bike improvement - increase FTP w/kg from current 2.5 to 3.5

    2) Run improvement - go faster!  Not exactly sure where I am at...we'll see where my 5k test puts me at next week. Hopefully, under 21min.

    3) No injuries, no injuries, no injuries...
