Bike setup for HIM RR??

I know that we're supposed to do the RR with race day bike setup, but I have a couple of questions.  I have a wheel cover, so I shoud use this for the RR I assume.  I'm going to get a set of race tires.  I think I would put those on for RR#2 a couple of weeks before the race, but nof to for RR#1.  Is that what most people do?  Thanks

  •  I suggest using the new tires as  you want to make sure they are good and they roll better broken in a bit anyway.  Lots of people will use the wheel cover for rr number two, I would not bother assuming that you have experience riding with it.  If not use it for sure.  Have fun.

  • I do the same for my A-race ... race tires/tubes go on the day before RR#2 and then typcially stay on through race day. I like to have the peice of mind know I have rode them multiple times and not had a pinch flat or anything like that before race day.

For b and c races tires go on the night before the race.
  • sounds like a plan on the tires.  I just got my wheel cover with the power meter in February, so I've never ridden with it before.  Probably a good ides to try it.  I was thinking of gettting latex tubes.  A little more trouble, but I think the numbers are pretty compelling.  Anyone know where to get know where to get latex tubes with stems long enough for FP60's?  If not, what valve extenders are good.  The only ones I have are the ones that came with my wheels.  I think to use those, I need latex tubes with removable cores - I think those are also difficult to find.

  • Search for the Challenge Latex tubes with removable value cores.  Then use any extender the moves the value core. I just picked some up a month or so ago and they work great.  I've never had a problem with the zipp style extenders but I also didn't trust them, even though I raced with them and michelin latex tubs for the last two years.

  •  If the challenge ones are the red ones I had terrible luck with them.  They seemed much more fragile than the michelin ones.  I may just be a spaz but I do not think so.  I have gone back to the michelin ones with the problem solver extenders [topeak]  they work great.  The zipp extenders work well also in reality.  I have one on my PT 808 that I train with and it has not been a problem ever for about 5000 miles.

  • Along these lines I wonder about carrying sufficient water... Or do you guys all just plan on stopping as necessary at convenience stores or at a car on a lap course?
  • Chris - are these the problem solver valve extenders

Do these just install over the valve core on the tube?

  • Matt - with the removable core, you take the core out of the tube and install it in the extender? Do you all carry a latex tube for a spare?

Yes, I removed the core and put it in the extender.  I have only used them for one race and two rides so far, but I have had really good luck with the Challenge tubes.  They are the red ones that Chris said he had issues with and they do seem thinner than the michelin ones.

No, normal spare as CO2 and latex do not get along, plus I don't want to have to worry about trying to get a fragile latex tube in on the side of a road.

For a HIM race sim, I can carry all the H20 I need on the bike and don't need to stop to refill.  I fill the profile aerobottle up front at the start and have 2 bottles in a rear hydration system on the back to refill on the fly (I don't use the rear hydration during the race- that reminds me I gotta remove that think some time this weekend).

For IM race sims I'll have to stop.  In the past I was able to strategically plan for a convenience store at about the spot where I'd need the refill.  I might have to do a double loop this year and stop at the car instead, but I've got lots of time to work out that detail.

  • Hey Nemo- If the weather is cooperative, I agree you can carry enough water for ~3 hours. 4 bottles between the aero/torpedo, down tube, and two in the rear means one for calories and three to drink. But if it gets really hot, that can be not quite enough for me, i.e., for the hot 3ish hours, I run into the limitation that anyone does for an IM simulation. The double loop solution is always very reasonable. I was just curious about how much of a "sin" people thought it was to stop at all. :-)
  •  Not a sin to stop and get water.  I do not think a less than 5 minute stop is going to change the data much at all.

As for the valve extenders these are my favorites.  They go over the top of the ones on the tube but allow you to tighten the valve.  $7, problem solved.
