Do you want to be on my crew for UMFL ?

I need 1 or 2 people to crew for Ultraman Florida 2/17-2/19/17.   Minimum crew is 2 and maximum crew is 4.   I had my crew of 2 all set to go earlier this year and unexpectedly lost my good friend Jim Soroka who was going to crew with  Heather my Crew Captain.  So I am looking for one or two people.  These will be what they call land crew for the bike and run portions all 3 days. These will be long days, they will leap frog the athlete (me) through out the 3 days on the bike/run providing any needs like clothes, nutrition, hydration, repairs, making sure I dont get lost, basically keeping me moving forward as smoothly as possible.  I have reserved a kayak and kayak escort .  Simon Shurey did this race last year and will be there again this year crewing for another athlete.  I am considering crewing for Simon @ Ultraman Hawaii in November 2017 if he gets in.

What is Ultraman?  Lots of info here.     http://ultramanflorida.com/

What it entails and includes.

1. Airfare to Orlando Florida if not within driving distance . (I will supply Southwest Airline points to pay for airfare).

2. Transportation to and from airport.

3. Accommodations will be a  room in a large 3 bedroom Condo at the Westgate Resorts in Orlando.  Room is available 2/14/17-2/20/17 with the race being held 2/17-2/19 but should be there on the 16th for race briefings.  This is the home base before and during the event.  So you could even combine this with something else in the area but would be needed fromt eh 16th-19th at least.

4. Food for 16th-19th.

5. Crew T-shirt and access to all the UMFL  awards, ceremony, meals etc.

Preferences and Requirements

1. Must be laid back, easy going, know , like, and get along with Heather (who doesn't?)  I'll be wound up enough and she doesn't need anyone else to take care .

2.  Interest in doing UMFL at a future date .  Being on a previous crew gives you priority in the future .

3.  Runner-  Day 3 is a long 52 mile run.  You are allowed pacers for the entire run.   That sounds like fun doesn't it?

4.  Bike mechanical skills a plus if needed on day one or two.

I realize this is an awful lot to ask of anybody and exactly why I had only asked Heather and my best friend Jim.  Hopefully this race has been on someones radar like it has been mine (I actually applied last year and did not get it).  If you are interested or have any questions please let me know here, PM, email timcronk@gmail.com ,  or phone 603-512-7536.  The RD does have extra volunteers that are willing to crew but I sure would prefer someone I know from the EN family.

  • Hmmmm........... I'll read up on and consider. Get back with ya. It should work out by that time of year work has dwindled to nothing and we are twirling our thumbs waiting for warmer weather so should be available. I'll see...........................
  • Put me on your short list Tim. PM sent.
  • I am up for it as well, and yes an interest in doing this maybe in a few years so.,.,

Also my wife is a good marathoner (3;40) so if you want her to come along too she could run with you.

I am up for running part of it as well, I am more like a 10 min miler for a marathon.

  • I would totally do it minus the run pace part... because Iz slow - If you need me, I would be there at the drop of a hat
  • Hi Tim,

I am 1.5 hours from Orlando and I love to run. I would be on board to help.
  • THIS I'd love to do!! Can't as I leave with the kids for Steamboat that weekend. After crewing/pacing for a friend doing a 200 Miler, I can attest that those that get involved are in for a tremendous learning experience and beware the dangers of drinking too much cool aid :-)

  • Tim - I'd love to do this. I love to run and I wrench pretty well also. Not sure of your time-frame for making a decision, but let's talk in AZ. If nothing else, I'd be interested to hear about your plans for execution and pacing.
  • Strong maybe. Will check on wife's vaction schedule.

Though no desire, yet, to do an ultraman myself.

Have the potential to be laid back. image
  • Very cool Tim.   I would love to help but have a work commitment that Friday.  I'll be following along for sure.

  • Great response from the team.  It would be great to see you execute this in person.  While I'd love to be there I just can't commit during that timeframe.

  • Well this is like an opportunity of a lifetime!! To crew for the legendary INSPIRING TC at an event that is insanely AMAZING! I would be there in heartbeat for you my friend. The earliest I could arrive is on Thursday  I could absolutely run with you as well! I'm here if you need- just let me know!!!

  • I'd love to crew for you, but am planning to do Moab Red Hot that weekend. Looks like you have plenty of volunteers ^^^. I'm interested in doing an Ultraman in the future, and look forward to following your adventure!
  • Tim, I am a strong maybe...that's the lead up to school vacation week, so I would need to check if you need me. Coach Rich will tell you I am useless with bikes, but I promise to eat all the bad food in your vicinity so you can focus on racing. Should be able to do some running by then!

Sounds like I may need to attend now so I can keep P's questionable food intake to a minimum

  • Tim - that's close to me and I would love to come but I'll be in the middle of my build for IMSA on 2 April. All the best there, but I'm sure you will knock it out of the park.
  • Tim, it looks like you have a good list of options going. But put me on your "oh shit" list in case something happens at the last minute. Joe and I will be spending Feb/March in Cleremont again this year so I'll be close by and could pinch hit if needed provided I can get the time off work.
  • Wow I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the response but I AM. I did not want to ask anyone directly to avoid making them feel obligated but now I have the opposite problem of how do I choose. Some of the people who have expressed interest are racing IMFL or IMAZ so I will wait until after those races to decide. But will do so shortly after that so I can arrange airfare and provide information to the RD about the crew. I can have up to a 4 person crew but though that 3 might be optimal as they only allow 1 car per racer and nothing larger than a mini-van. Currently planning on using my Suv but that could change and rent a mini-van if needed.

In the mean time can anyone interested please answer these questions so that I may begin to prioritize? You can answer here or directly to me or both if so choose:-)
    1. Are you a definite YES, or a Maybe.
    2. If a definite YES can you arrive on the 15th to be available for the 16th's race briefing's and then the race 17-19? Note: you can arrive as early as the 14th.
    3. Can you run 9 min miles? (I figure that would be my dream pace and will most likely be slower)
    4. Anything else you can think of? Like definitely interested in doing UMFL in the future or are you a local with knowledge of the course and area?

    Thank You so much Tim,
  • @ Tim - I am a no... But thinking you might want to ask Q#3 differently, "Can you run 9 min miles for ___ distance?"
how will they be running? swapping with other pacers? continuously? what distance per leg if swapping, how many legs, etc?
  • sorry backing out.   wife has off from work then.       have a great build.

    Thank You so much Tim,

    1) Definite yes commitment if you eventually decide to have me as part of your posse.  My busy time begins in mid-November with a final deadline of Feb 1.  Usually within a week or 10 days I can have my desk/schedule cleared enough to take some much needed down-time.  This would be a great release for me while supporting you and by extension, Heather.

    2)  Yes, travel and arrive Wed. Feb 15th to be onsite and attend any/all necessary briefings and logistics sessions.  My prefered return date is Mon Feb 20th to be back home prior to work Tues.  Local airport is BGR, nearest SouthWest airport is PWM.

    3) Yes.  Just ran MDI (#13) on less than 20 mpw over 10 wks, longest run 14 miles and still managed to even split (1:55:37, 1:56:13) and BQ 2018 @ 8:51.  Being on the line as sherpa/pacer, I plan to rebuild my run durability because it is my responsibility to you that I show up prepared to run 40+ miles comfortably without fading if necessary.  I do realize that it will be a crew effort and running relay legs is more likely.

    4) No current plans to run UMFL at this time.  However it most definitely is the kind of over the top events I feel drawn to.  So who knows what I will be thinking in 3-5 years.  If there are others with ambitions to do UMFL, I understand the justification for having them as your crew.

Tim I'd be honored to assist you and Heather on your UMFL journey.  I also am understanding that for a variety of reasons you may prefer others on your crew.

    Run Strong,

    Steven

  • Tim,
Confirmed our schedule so I'm a yes on 1-3, we're driving back from IMFL now but will get you more details when I'm in front of a computer.
  • Thanks to everyone who has offered to help me. The EN love and camaraderie is beyond belief with people always willing to help. I feel like I can never give back enough. This weekend I was able to loan a disc wheel and bike computer to EN'er's in need at IMAZ so just a tiny little bit of pay if forward and I do hope to help Simon out in Hawaii on his quest for 2017 :-)

My UMFL Crew will be Heather Webber, Steve West, and Scott Renick....

Next up will be a UMFL training/prep thread... Thanks again for the kind words and offers to help !
  • Travel arrangements set, vacation notice in, and working on ramping up my weekly run miles. Plan is to be logging 40+ mpw by the new year and 50+ mpw in Feb.

Loved the 2016 UMFL video. Impressive how Simon rallied on the run to pass half the field! I have no doubt TC will leave an indelible mark in his wake as well.

Really looking forward to the chance to help in what ever way is needed to get you 321.6 miles as efficiently as possible.
  • Looks like a well organized sherpa at the UMWCH.....

  • have a great build-up Tim
  • Tim, you may have already seen this...but just in case you didn't, here is a detailed race report from the dude who won Ultraman Florida last year:

    http://forum.slowtwitch.com/forum/Slowtwitch_Forums_C1/Triathlon_Forum_F1/Ultraman_World_Champs_Race_Report_P6157957/
  • @Gabe, Thank you ... Brian Hagan already sent it to me as well....I have not read that report yet but read his UMFL and followed him here... will get caught up on it.
