Help with Ventum Decision

Hey all,

OK, so i need some help.  I am going to purchase a Ventum.  However, i need help on deciding what to do about wheels.  Today, i have a brand new pair of Zipp 404 (front) and 808 (rear) that i got last year and i have yet to race on them.  I am looking at selling my 2010 Orbea Ordu.  I have no training wheels because i believe that if i am going to drop some cash on some good wheels, i am going to use them to train and to ride.

So here is the decision that i need to make.  Do i:

1) buy the ventum with standard wheels and place the standard wheelson my Orbea when i sell it.

2) Buy race wheels with my Ventum, then sell my Orbea without wheels and sell the Zipps to help pay for the bike.

Thoughts?  I am looking at the Edco's not the Enve's.

Please help

  • You'll never come close to recouping the $$ spent on your Zipps if you resell now. They are great wheels. Why not buy a used set of Shimano, Mavic, etc for <$100 and put them on the Orbea. Then put your Zipps on your new Ventum and you're all set. I train and race with Zipps on my tri bike. Seems like this is the most cost effective way to go and you'll have a great wheelset too. Agree 100% if you spend the $$ on them, you should use them!
  • What Brad said. For sure keep those Zipps for the Ventum. Put some regular wheels on the Orbea and dump it. Easiest option is number one but you could save even more $$ getting a used wheel set to sell with the Orbea. Then use the savings to get the Pioneer PM packaged with the V!
  • #1 for sure. And you CAN train on them. Today's race wheels are much more robust than a decade ago. Unless you are a Clydesdale there is no reason you can't train and race on them and get every dollar out of them.
  • brad is 100% on the $ here... i would look at performance bike or nashbar for a stoopid good deal on training wheels to sell with the orbea, can also look at the facebook groups "online swap meet" and "tri 'n sell it" might find something cheap there as well, even in the race wheel category that might make your orbea more attractive..
  • I went with the standard wheels that come with the bike. No extra charge. Those will go on the Orbea. I'm thinking about holding onto the orbea until march/April to maximize the price... thoughts?
