Revolution3 Triathlon Announcements -- Triathlon is a Tough Business

Really confused by Rev3's recent announcements.  Last Friday then dropped Knoxville and Cedar Point, and thus seemed focused on East Coast events.

However, today they write that "Ironman 70.3 Maine is a licensed event that is owned and operated by Revolution3 Triathlon"   Why license to your chief competitor?  Unless of course you need a huge cash infusion to continue operations.  Wanda Sports seems to have a lot of that lying around.

Last year Rev3 had the deal with Challenge and then that fell through.  It's great competing in this sport, but the business side must be pretty rough.

Comments

  • It's a toss up whose portfolio is shrinking faster, Rev 3 or HITS. Toughman seems to be the only North American competitor to WTC that is growing instead of dying.
  • HITS has some good niche races, just like Rev3. I'm not as familiar with Toughman, but they have a lot of events ... and are spread throughout the Americas. (Well, except for Canada)

If I owned Rev3, and given the current market, my choices would be trying merge with my peers and establish an equal-or-better brand than Ironman; or cash out to the clear market leader. To me today's announcement indicates which direction they're headed.
  • There is a lot about that announcement that does not make sense. Me thinks there is more to the story and we will eventually know some of which may involve Timberman. I will say I love that race with the Rev3 numbers and not sure I would like it with WTC numbers.
  • If they try to jam 2000 athletes on that course like their other races it will be very tight to say the least.
