Went in 7 minutes after the gun.  The water looked calm at first. Once  past the second buoy the waves started to build up, I had to stop so I could see the buoys.  Someone was kicking me in the face and side.  I decided to move over to the right and find a calm place. At the first left turn the waves seamed extremely high. I  made it half way to the next buoy and was being pulled under. I tried to fight it but decided to go on my back. That didn’t work because the waves were going over top of my head and pulling me under. I decided to save my energy and do a side stroke. I made it to the next buoy and was headed to shore. The waves were unpredictable so I was spotting the highest building available. I could only breath on the left side because the waves were overpowering my right side.  I made it out of the water and was dreading the second loop. Focus, stay in your box control what I could. Thankfully, I arrived at the first turn without any trouble. After the turn the waves started taking over again. I decided to do the side stroke until the next turn. I knew my swim time was running out and I had to stay focused to finish the last leg of the swim.  I decided to have the wetsuit strippers help. Picked up my bag, took out a banana, chews and ate while walking to the changing area. I asked a volunteer for help once inside.  Picked up my bike and discovered my computer would not turn on. I tried to turn it on in the first mile with no success. I needed to know the time of day and approximate miles per hour.  With great hesitation, I decided to turn on my Garmin wrist watch and after fiddling with turning it around on my wrist I was on my way.  Bike nutrition: I managed to follow it:

First two hours use the following per hour: e Fuel powder 3 scoops with 1/8 of base salt.  e Gel x 1,3rd. hour start with following per hour:Tailwinds 2 scoops and E Gel x 1.

At the bike, special needs, I stopped and picked up my bag.  That didn’t go well. I decided to put a coke in the bag and forgot to open it ahead of time. So, once I opened the coke within seconds it was squirting all over me. I put the power bar in my back pocket and went on my way.  I can’t remember where but my bike chain fell off three times. The third time it was stuck and I had to turn my bike over to pull it. My hands were covered in grease, thankfully I had my sun sleeves wiped it off and was on my way.  My watch did not pick up the power so basically, it was for time of day. I think the only reprieve from the wind was between mile 80 and 90.  After 75 miles on the bike I was concern something happened to my husband because I did not see him along the way.   Only my friend Terri was there, I would ask her if Mike was ok and her reply was always the same.  He will be here later.  Finally, I saw him at mile 86 and was relieved.  He didn’t want Terri to tell me that the water tank in our condo broke and flooded.  He spent the entire day cleaning up the mess and relocating our things to another place.

I was so relieved to finish the bike. Once in transition I realized how exhausted I was from fighting the wind.  After drinking and eating a half of a banana I was fine.  I was pleasantly surprised when I started the run because my legs were not sore.  At that moment, I realized my bike effort was to slow. I was running slow the first 3 miles but after mile 3, I started to run walk. My watch died at mile 12.35.  As I approached the turnaround a volunteer said I had one minute to make the cutoff and she would get my bag.  I made the cutoff and she asked if I needed my bag, I refused it and kept running.  I saw my husband at mile 16.  He said I had two hours to finish and my friend Terri was waiting for me at the park.  I thought no problem, 3.5 miles to the park then 6 to the finish I can do this. I started to speed up after he told me she was waiting at the park. In addition, the sweeper cop was riding his motor cycle behind me with lights a flashing, I knew I was in trouble. My husband decided NOT to tell me I needed to be at the park by 10:35 PM (a cutoff I forgot about). There was a race volunteer at the park entrance. He stepped in front of me and said it’s over. I was going to deck this guy and keep going, we did a little dance to the left, to the left then to the right, to the right. Keep in mind I am 5’3” and he was 6’7’ about 250 lbs. It took everything out of me to hold back from getting in his face!  Took a deep breath turned around and sat on the curb. I made it to the park by 10:37 and the race was over for me.

After training for IM Choo then doing IM Florida I’m going to take some time off from Tri training. The only thing that is going to make me faster is taking off some weight.  There is a six-week weight loss program in my area and that is what I am going to focus on until January.

Thank you to Coach Patrick, Coach Rich and the team for supporting me over past four years.

  • Yvette you just rock with that awesome heart and spirit! The day had a ton of unexpected challenges and the swim (waves and just more chaos) and bike (wind!!) were definitely harder than expected (I thought). What I love about you is that you kept going! You kept pushing and you stayed so positive!!

Good luck with your body composition goals. Hope that goes well for you. And, thanks for being a positive light and encouraging spirit. It will all come together. Enjoy some well-deserved time off! imageimageimageimage
