Keith Shireman - Macro Form

Coach I'm wondering about the half marathon that's suggested at the end of the Run Durability program. I'm having a hard time finding a race on the projected date. There is one the next weekend or should I run on my own that date?

Also I'm curious as to what everyone else is eating on the bike/run for their nutrition plan. I know what works for one person won't necessarily work for another. Everyone's needs are different. Just need to take a look at my plan and make changes for Ironman Texas. Thanks!

This is a bonus vs must have item. Bonus if you can make it work but no need to roll your own solo half marathon.

Please see this resource, tons of information here. Also, you have a LOT of time to dial this in before IMTX so I wouldn't worry about it too much right now.

  • Coach Rich I have a decision to make. I went today for xrays and getting an mri on my lumber spine. I have a bone spur at L5 and some thinning of the disc. which in turn is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. I've taken this week off from training to let the inflammation go down. It's going to be the mileage on the run that will prevent me from getting all the training in for Ironman Texas. At what point should I start to think about withdrawing from this race based on what I've learned today? The swim and the bike doesn't bother me. I'm 7 weeks into the Outseason at this point.
  • I'm going to add to this since I got an mri yesterday. I have an L4-5 disc herniation with a swollen L5 nerve root. A tear at L5-S1 with edema at the nerve root at S1. Going to see a sports spine doc soon and see how we can treat this. Just don't know if I should go ahead and cancel Ironman Texas or gut it out on the run portion and walk it. Not the way I had hope to compete in my first full ironman.
  • Hey Keith, sorry to hear that!

You have time to work through this and decide what you want to do about IMTX so it's not a decision that needs to be made right now. In the end, it depends on what your goals are for IMTX and if walking the run is something you're interested in / would still be a "good" experience for you. That said, this is all just a game, anything involving your back and nerves is no joke, and Ironman will always be there. Don't do anything for this race that would jepordize your long term health and quality of life.

Again...this is alllll just a game!
  • Gotcha! While disappointing and I had a good cry about.... I'm over it right now. Waiting on the doctors appointment now to consider my options at this point. I'll have to cut back on running since that's where the pain lies. I'll report back after the doctors appointment!
  • Coach I will be holding off on IMTX this year and focusing on building back to a better form. I
m doing a few sprints, Olympics as a build up to IM 70.3 Muncie in July. Back is better just have to build back from an endurance standpoint! I will be back and 100% ready for IMTX in 2018!!
  • Great! Please give me your race schedule here so I can plan everything out for you: http://members.endurancenation.us/TrainingPlan/TriathlonSeasonRoadmap.aspx
