2016/17 NovOS Week 4 Run Thread: Turkey Time!

Hey Kids!

It's time for the holidays, and that means fixing your training week. With Thanksgiving this Thursday, and travel issues abounding, you will likely have some modifications to make...I suggest you adjust your week is follows:

Mon - OFF

Tue - Bike/Run as Planned

Wed - VO2 bike from Thursday only, in AM, no run.

Thu - Hard run, have fun!

Fri - Off or nice long walk day.

Sat - As planned.

Sun - Easy run from Zone 1 to TRP pace for the duration of what you normally run on Wednesday.

Of course that week might not work for everyone. You might not have access to your bike between Wednesday and Sunday... In which case please do not go find a local gym to ride a recumbent bike!!! If there's some kind of spin class or something you can jump into at the local gym, then go for it!

But if that's not an option I suggest you do this:

Mon - Tuesday's Bike / Run.

Tue - OFF

Wed - VO2 bike from Thursday only, in AM, no run.

Thu - Hard run on Turkey day if you are trotting -- if not, do a nice short 45' run here with the intensity from your Sunday to prepare for gluttony!

Fri - Off or nice long walk day with family.

Sat -  Easy run from Zone 1 to TRP pace for the duration of what you normally run on Wednesday.

Sun - Short run before return travel; call it 30 to 45 minutes at TRP effort / pace.

No matter what you do this weekend, travel safely and have a great time!

  • Thanks Coach P! I was about to ask how to adjust this week for a hard Turkey Trot Race.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Thanks Coach P for the preemptive strike on what is sure to be a busy week for all. Be sure to keep tracking your run volume on the

    Run Tracker Sheet

My goal for Thursday is to not eat more calories than I burn in my AM workout. What are your goals?
  • This confirms my ideas for myself. Thanks coach.
    @Derrek- I expect a legendary performance Thursday
  • Back after a week of work/vacation in Copenhagen with my wife. Beautiful city...did a really cool/fun tour/run with "Run Copenhagen", a local tour company. Apparently they've got branches in a number of city. Great way to get a cool view of a city and still get in a good workout. No biking for a week, though, so this morning was a little tough. Got it done, though: 3 x 9' @ 100%, 101%, 102%

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
  • @ Bill - Always to get in some running while on vacation, especially in new places. Might want to post the bike wko in the bike thread though.
  • Ok, so I might be an idiot. I did my Wed run today so as to get my Thurs bike in tomorrow before I get on a plane for the weekend. I actually read the all notes all the way to the bottom and it said- this is your long steady workout. Don't exceed 13 miles. Same thing Sunday says except that's the HARD long one. But since I like doing half marathons over the winter and I run slowly, long for me is 90-120 minutes on The Weeknd and I stick to the prescribed minutes on Wednesday. I've been doing that distance on the weekend combined with the intervals and it's HARD! But mostly doable. I don't have time for longer than 90 min during the week.
So here's the question- move my long run intervals to Wed for the prescribed time and do the long steady run at TRP for up to 120 min on week. See how Thursday bike goes ... or leave it and enjoy the mental toughness I am developing doing intervals combined with a lot of distance??
  • @Leslie - I think you nailed it when you said - build mental toughness! The benefits gained on that Sunday run will carry over for you during your races over the next few months and into next year. I also think it helps mitigate the drift in pace towards the end of the race by executing the intervals on that Sunday wko.
  • @Leaslie, I agree with Jeff. A couple of other things to consider would be the cost to your Thursday ride and what fits best in your schedule.

I had my first run since 31 Oct and it felt great. No pain today. I'm going to keep the intensity and distance down for a little while, but I'm happy to finally post in the run forum. Hopefully I get out of work early today day and can do the core workout I skipped along with the bike.
  • @ Leslie - Best to consider how your run will effect downstream workouts. If you will be too fatigued, or it will wipe out the next day's wko, then maybe rethink. If, however, the next day's wko is doable, but downright hard, then go for it.

@ Ashton - Great to get back running again. Slow short running is better than none.

Working to salvage the disaster that was the end of last week and get back on track to a hacked up holiday run schedule. I completed last Sunday's run yesterday. 51' for 6.26 miles -
    4 mi @ TRP
1 mi @ Z4 (against the wind and up a buggar of a hill.)
1 mi @ Z5 (tail wind and a steep downhill)
.26 mi of walking after each interval as I was spent.

I moved Wednesday's run to today. So that would be back to back runs.
63' for 7.56 mi @ under TRP pace, with a .75 mi Z2 push to end it.

Tomorrow's ride will be tough, but it's what works with this week's schedule.
  • Only did 1 mile TRP tonight after the bike, but did a 2 yesterday, so kind of evens out; perhaps I shouldn't have done it yesterday. Looking forward to the long run tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving all! Mark
  • I did about 30 minutes off the bike yesterday on the TM.  I think it was my first TM run since last OS, but I am so happy to be running again!  No strides, because I want to get a bit stronger first.

  • 7 miles in 63' tonight; felt great trail running at night, though it requires a slower pace to avoid yard sale'ing it.
  • I had a great Turkey Trot 5 miler today, especially after a bike FTP workout Tuesday and VO2 workout yesterday. I ran this race hard to the point where I was ready to stop after 3 miles, but I'm learning that the "magic" happens in the uncomfortable zone and that's where I tried to stay. My time was 31:28/6:17 avg pace and 4/256 in my AG. This increased my VDot by 1 point to 52. Woot Woot! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
  • @Derrek -- way to go!

Hi all -- I've been absent from the forums but getting in consistent OS work the first 4 weeks. On this Thanksgiving Day, I'm grateful to my EN teammates for their mojo and pledge to post more often going forward.

Great day today starting with a 5k Turkey Trot with my son and a Detroit Lions victory!!

I ended up 12/270 OA and first in my AG. Bumped my vdot back to 50 and hopefully will keep moving up.
  • @Jeff, Thanks
@Mike, Thanks and Congrats on your AG win!!
@Josh, I see you had a legendary run too! Is that a 5K PR?
  • Awesome job @Derrek and @Mike. Yesterday was a great Turkey Trot for me as well. Huge PR for me. I think this run training is already paying off. 47 vdot on 11/2 and 50 vdot now.

10k race, 40:42/6:33 ave pace. 65/2100 OA, 8/176 AG. Perfect weather and lots of fast people racing.

Looking forward to recalculating my run zones and improving further.
  • @Ashton, Wow! Congrats on the PR. That's a huge VDOT jump. Now your reward is more work! LOL. Enjoy the faster paces and easy into the new paces.
  • Lots of motivation and strong work! 2017 is shaping up to be a good one!!
  • Poor form by me on not updating on a regular basis. Here's the week so far:

Tuesday - bricked the run, exactly according to plan. Felt pretty good at the end.

Wednesday - best OS TRP run so far. Was able to push harder at the end, and overall pace was significantly above prior test-suggested pace. We'll see how it goes at week 8...

Thursday - no Turkey Trot for me; on the 'mill instead. Brick according to plan with setting the TM for a little faster than prior TRP. Still felt good doing the strides at the end.

Great work, y'all. Hope most of you are getting some free time this weekend!
  • @Derrek- yes PR for me. Small jump from 639mi to 632mi/avg. No change in vdot though
  • Definitely lots of good work getting posted. I can officially say that I took part in Black Friday - just ordered new Hoka Clifton 2 for $55 off running warehouse...quite the deal.
  • Man, you guys were a bunch of rock stars on your turkey trots. I've been reading along and living vicariously through your posts. Non stop family time, cooking, baking and decorating these past three days for me.

I should get some computer time later tonight to roll through the posts.
  • Did a 5k today inspired by coach Ps post. Need a lot of work before my 5k time converts to my 1/2 marathon goal.
  • Awesome results on the Turkey Trots everyone!! Great Vdot bump Ashton!! I had to miss my local turkey trot this year due to right knee pain, and a 3/4 mile steep downhill during mile 2. I didnt want to pound the knee during that downhill. I have been slacking in posts, so I'm getting back in the saddle here. I bumped my workout days ahead one day, to have the option for an off day on Thanksgiving.

Did bike on Monday and a TRP run on Tuesday for 68 mins. Travel nixed the Sunday TRP run. so jumbled up the sched a bit this week. Felt great on the Tuesday run, and did slightly better than TRP each mile with relatively easy effort. Z3 finish went fine too. Rt knee seems to be improving.

Brick treadmill TRP run on Wed for 3 miles. Again, no problems there.  Did an hour TRP-Z2 run on Thanksgiving, to give me some room for food. :-) Felt good again.  No brick run this Sat morning, due to family duties. Will hit the Sunday run as planned.

  • Tough brick run today. First run at new run zones based off Turkey Trot 10k. Heart rate was super high and I'm looking forward to it coming down...soon!
  • I did the brick at MP/Z2. Felt some tightness in my right hamstring. I'm thinking I need more recovery from the 5 mile turkey trot. Tomorrow's run will be at an easy z1 pace.
  • Finished the brick starting at LRP moving up to high Z2/low Z3. HR was overall a little lower than it has been at similar paces on these brick runs, so I'd expect to see some V-dot improvement next test (honestly, it can't go down much...).
  • Easy 3.2 brick tonight; but quick work trip is going to have me up early to get the long run in. Running a trail half next weekend, so looking to get 10 in. May do 3x1 instead of 2x1. I really like the mile repeats:o) If it was easy, everyone would do it!
  • Did 5k warmup then 5k race then 5k cool down today for the hard Sunday run. Finished 2nd OA in 18:13 for vDOT up a point to 55. Was very happy to do this with the heavy legs from yesterdays long bike.
