Will there be an IM Los Cabos in 2017?

So I missed the IMAZ signup and am now trying to decide if I should do the Foundation entry or find another race.

The other race that fits my schedule is IM Los Cabos. Registration is set to open on 11/28 and I am thinking of signing up. But I am worried that they will end up cancelling the race given how low the turnout was this year. And if they wait to cxl in the summer I won't have a chance to find another race.

Does anyone know if this kind of thing happens? Does IM ever open races then cxl them?

  • In 2012, WTC canceled the 2013 Ironman New York about 5-6 weeks after the 2012 event. Given the lead time needed for planning, if Los Cabos not open  for registration soon, you might do well to be concerned.

    What about Cozumel or Louisville?

  • Thx Al. The website says that they will open for registration on Nov 28. What I'm afraid of is that I get signed up for los cabos, a few months go by and the IMAZ foundation slots fill up THEN ironman decides to scrap los cabos for lack of interest and I am stuck.
  • When I dropped off my bike at TriBike Transport post IMAZ the rep. said he heard they might cancel L. Cabos. I hope not, my family wanted me to race it next year so they can go there.
  • I am watching Las Cabos also, but my alternate race is IMKY, I am betting they will cancel Los Cabos, but who knows...
  • interesting. Today the registration is open via the IM los Cabos website but the Ironman website still has it is pending...
  • My guess is that the discrepancy will be worked out this week.
  • well, los cabos is open on the IM website. Does that mean it is going to happen? I know that other races have been cancelled in the past. Were they ever open for registration and THEN cancelled?
  • My advice is chill out on this. While I can't remember any WTC race being cancelled for non-weather reasons after it had opened for registration, even if it does, (a) they are either going to give you your money back or equal value at an entry into another race AND (b) there are several other races about the same time which will not sell out before next summer: Louisville, Cozumel, Brazil II (Fortaleza), and maybe FL.

I am very interested in doing Los Cabos next year. But I am done playing the game of signing up a year in advance (except for IM AZ in 2019, when I age up). Next summer, I will choose a fall race from the ones still open, with LC my first choice, assuming I haven't trashed myself in my A race in Penticton end of August.
