Rally week black fly warning

Just a quick note to the rallyers: Didn't see this anywhere so I though I should toss it out. Everybody may already be aware of this, but as a former resident of the Adirondacks, I have experienced the fact that June 14th is well within black fly season, so bring your favorite formula of bug juice with you to the rally. If you haven't experienced them personally, they truly are a nearly biblical plague. Unlike mosquitoes, they bite and they swarm. You'll be alright on the bike when your moving, but as soon as you stop, it's like they've been following you the entire time. I've purchased an herbal version of repellant up in the mountains, but bring some repellant from home for sure. Thankfully, IMLP the race is scheduled out of black fly season, otherwise I would think it would be unbearable. They don't seem to be quite as bad in the higher elevations around Lake Placid, but if memory serves, they're still around.

  • beware the swarm. Eric is right...I have had success consuming enough beer to exude an unpleasant smell for the critters, but that might not sync well with your race day goals! image

  • Oh god, I'd forgotten about black flies. They do get as high as Placid - I visited my college roommate's family in Saranac Lake during the summer one year and had golf ball sized welts.
