Tahiti Camps...anyone?

Ok...so the idea of an unofficial camp in Tahiti came up in the "AZ group me" discussion and I'm working on this for 2017.

The Idea is to have 2 camps:

1 in may for the Xterra Tahiti (may 6th)

1 in sept/oct for a HIM (looks like oct 1st but the committee is still working on it)

Carte de Tahiti avec Moorea à l'ouest.

Both competitions will be held in Moorea (the small Island on the map), 45 min away by ferry from Tahiti.

Plan is to get here (I say here and not there because I'm..here (Mahina on the map)  for 7 to 8 days with 4 days in Moorea to check the course, crush it on race day and enjoy the island on rest day...

1 to 2 days in Tahiti before and after Moorea to visit Tahiti, get your bikes ready, get some cool rides here, grocery shop and whatnot...

Lodging in Tahiti:

My parents' house has 2 extra bedrooms (1 with 2 queen beds, 1 with a twin bed), and a bungalow (1 queen bed). All rooms and the bungalow have their own restroom and shower. They are more than willing to welcome u there for free... (You'll pay for grocery shopping for your food)

Lodging in Moorea:

We can do it 2 ways:

1-my parents have a piece of land there with a cabin style-lodging where we can set camp camping style (1 toilet/1 shower/ everybody sleep in 1 room (or we bring a tent+ air mattress)

2- We can rent a house for the 3 or 4 nights in Moorea (from 300 to 500 USD per night for a 4 bedroom house)

I would like to keep those camp small (4 to 5 peeps max)  so we don't run into logistical nightmare (like rent a bus, 2 houses, etc...)

A few thoughts:

- those races will be my A races so I will/should be on holiday for them, meaning that I will have time to spend with u (which is the goal) but I still have a wife and family and I want to keep it that way, which mean that I will sleep at my place and will be at my parents from 7am to 5pm and some/most dinner nights...

- You will stay at my parents place and they mean the world to me so be nice to them, you are not at a hotel so u make your bed and clean your mess, and there is no room service. Although my parents will decline any help, you are always welcome to help with the chores (dress the table, cook a meal if you are a good cook, etc..)

- U must be "ez going", if u are a Type-A (like in A-hole), it's a long walk from their place to the airport... so bring your happiness and enjoy the tahitian hospitality.

- If the demands for the camp are too high, 2016 AZ cell members get priority with the coaches and the Eners who helped me a lot through these years, but I can still arrange your trip for extra members (but you will need to rent a car, get a hotel, etc...)

- U are still welcome any day of the year, just PM me

-Flights from LAX daily (8h flight) I'm working on getting a free pass for your bike if u travel with my airline

- If u live in Hawaii, only 1 flight (5h) on saturday night, so u'll have to come early and leave camp right after the race to get back to the airport.

-a few things to consider:

Tahiti is french so not everybody speaks english

We are in islands lost in the pacific so everything is expensive and u may not find your one-of-kind toothpaste or 27.5 x28 latex tube

check Airline ticket price before anything, it might be a deal breaker for some (we do have codeshare agreements with AA, so u probably can buy a Phoenix-Tahiti and back ticket, but u are still transiting in LAX)

Now...anyone interested so we can workout the details?

  • Sounds awesome.  I wish I could join you!

  • @Mike: check the airline rates, SAU's (u can come with family), dates, etc..; and let me know

here's a teaser For the Xterra (when it was in Tahiti):
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdM8fO6oXKM

Moorea's Xterra ride won't be as difficult and even more beautiful (Moorea is actually one of my favorite island)
  • PSA : his family can cook good pastry..................

Will look into that, that might be fun
  • You are living the dream!!! Wish I could attend...the camp would be my "A" experience...no need to race.
  • Checking flights. Airline recommendation from Hawaii? Also considering to bring the family so also looking at vacation options. MTF.
  • @Howard: only 1 direct flight from honolulu operated by Hawaiian Air on saturday night (direct flight are not always the cheapest option). So u either come 1 or 2 weeks. No problem for u and family to come over (how many are u guys?and age of the kids?). U can even come not for the tri thing.
Other option is HNL-Lax-PPT or HNL-AKL-PPT
    Keep me informed
    MTF???
  • @FPP and Paul: let me know when/if u get the green light
  • David, I like the idea of the half IM in Oct. I need to consider this my 50th birthday present/vacation.
  • @David: Thanks for the options.  That direct flight is definitely way too expensive for the whole family.  So may do multiple trips...one for the whole family as that would just be awesome for the family.  And training trips for me.  It'll be five of us...3 kids (ages: 14, 7, 5 (all girls)).  sorry about the acronyms...habit...MTF: more to follow.  Will definitely keep you informed.

  • @ David - no green light for me, I just think it sounds awesome. My time off for 2017 will be consumed by IM South Africa, a big vacation in northern England and ITU Worlds in Canada. I would enjoy reading about it though.
  • That sounds amazing.  I spent 10 days in the surrounding islands for my honey moon 15 years ago.  Absolutely the most beautiful place I have ever been.

Almost a month later, I'm finally seeing the finalized Tahiti Triathlon calendar.  How did I miss it...don't answer that; clearly I didn't have this thread highlighted as a favorite. This is awesome and will be my HIM for the fall.  Unfortunately, the family trip in may has fallen off with a bunch of conflicts, but the trip in October is a keeper. Will definitely confirm by the end of June. Gotta make sure the job doesn't get in the way.

  • If anyone is interested in this, I am seriously interested in planning a spring 2018 camp NOT based around a race.. Please post your interest here in the thread and we can hash it out

thank you David for throwing this out there!
  • ok guys, don't plan anything for april 2018, will be in mallorca for my 1st EN camp ;)
  • Hey Dave! Sorry a little slow, but unfortunately I'll have to delay our visit to Tahiti. Particularly, timing for October is now bad for work. I still am hopeful to get around the pacific a little more. Of note I pulled the trigger and registered for IM Austrailia on May 2018 and am praying I have no conflicts. Still optimistic on the Tahiti camp.
  • @Howard Matthews too bad u're not coming, but mi casa es tu casa anytime ;)

  • What is best time of year to go?
  • @Scott Dinhofer it depends on what u want to do... but weather wise "june-july-august" are supposedly our best months (sunny and not too hot) but also our most expensive plane ticket wise... if u want big surf on a safe spot (beaches), december/january, if u want big surf on a reef, May is usually crazy....
