Suggestions for Mid-May Epic Week Destination

Mapping out my season and I'm looking for a destination for a 7-10 day Epic Camp in the 2nd or 3rd week of May.

Criteria:

-Must have 99.9% probability of dry weather.

-not stupid hot.  Tucson is out, if I'm reading the 'average temperatures' correct.  Ideal would be 23-25 degrees.

-Close to major airport. Preferably no more than a 5h flight from Toronto.

-adequate cycling infrastructure.

-climbing is fine, but not essential.

Advice?   Input?  Thoughts?

isn't tour of california in may?

Yes....looks like all roads lead to CA for your requirements.   Florida will likely be wet, CO or the Smokies may be cool.   An alternative could be the Hill Country of Texas...you could probably get a direct flight to Austin.

  • Southern Utah is very nice in May. You could hit Zion, Bryce, Arches, and Canyonlands National Parks. Tons of very good road cycling and even better MTBing. You could even squeeze in St Goerge 70.3 for fun. Las Vegas, SLC, or Denver are the closest airports.
  • Tour of California !!!!! EPIC !!!!

Trust me - it's not something you want to aspire to.  Case study: I just went to the post office to get a 2017 race season supply of the special, thick, blue elastics that I like to use to 'level' my bike shoes when they are attached to the pedals in T1.

For races in July next year.    It's December.

I'd like to X2 on "may not be something to aspire to"... When Dave says the word EPIC he means it...  I know, I have lived thru a 30hr week with him (he did 2 back to back 30+hr weeks).... Next thing you know I'm signed up for an Ultraman... So be careful what you wish for :-)

  • Dave,

I've got no specific locations but perhaps the ToC is a bit of different stimuli your training could use.  Just tack on a few additional days after the camp if you want to  get in some dedicated tri training.  I'm sure you could get a few good routes around Monrovia after the camp and fly out of LAX when done.  I realize that this is not your typical epic week and would come at a cost to your plan for tri specific training.
